Tesla speeds up odometers to avoid warranty repairs, U.S. lawsuit claims

A new law suit against President Musk says that Tesla software is programmed to give false odometer readings so they can avoid Warrenty repairs. Plaintiff says he drove 20 miles but Tesla added 72 miles to his odometer readings, for example….

If true, Musk should be sent to an El Salvadorian prison….
    • The plaintiff Nyree Hinton alleged that Tesla odometer readings reflect energy consumption, driver behavior and “predictive algorithms” rather than actual mileage driven.

I wonder if Musk can get the US tax payers to defend him and cover the settlement, like Co president Trump does?

This was why they needed to abruptly shift to the RW customer base. They will bend over the table and accept this with the standard euphoria.

Apparently Telsa owners have been questioning their odometer readings going back at least a year…. Some think it’s because cars were not meeting their advertised range, so Musk faked the reading.

In some ways I get it, stop and go traffic is harsh on all cars, and doesn’t advance the odometer to reflect that…. But faking the odometer reading is not the solution….

Yes, hard on ALL cars. But only on some can you hire half-wit 20 year-olds to code the scam into the vehicle.

Manufacturers have been aware of this stop/go idea since the first day stopping and going in cars became a reality. The warranty has the concept baked in.

The Flock will be here in full defense as soon as Prez Elon sends out the OTA update telling them he actually discovered S&G driving and that theft is OK as long as it had been earned, by billionaires that work harder than parasites that finance cars.

Potentially criminal and vile, for sure.

But who are we kidding? Co-Presidents Elmo and Trumputin can commit crimes at will. There is literally no mechanism to constrain them.

So any thoughts of accountability on this should be dismissed.

In this case the new Tesla demographic is a group that accepts prison love. So as long as they are willing to be Schillingered, eh, have at it.

    I’m not surprised by this.

If I ever buy EV it will not be a Tesla.

Volkswagen scammed people with their GTI diesel mileage estimates if I remember correctly.

As I said in whatever other thread mentioned this, I’m surprised Tesla doesn’t respond to customer issues with poop emojis. That seems to be the level of respect Musk has for his own customer base (or really, people in general).

VW engineers as I recall scammed emissions tests. I don’t think they changed odometer readings. It was just about scamming the tests, and then the cars would drive around with less than advertised emissions performance.

Both seem criminal/fraud. Isn’t it a crime to mess with odometers? Most people would be worried about “rolled back” odometers . I.e if you have a 100k mileage car, if you could have it show 50k or something you boost that resale value with a “low miles” used car. The buyer would be defrauded by the false odometer reading. It’s a felony to do that. I don’t think too many were previously worried about their own cars rolling forward to show more miles. :emoji_joy:

“People” sorta. But not directly at the individual customer, like this.

VW had implanted software to run the engine at a reduced output to defeat emissions tests by the EPA. So the vehicles emitted NOx at levels many times higher than allowed when running normally. In the end that is indeed “people”, but basically everyone sharing the burden and thus diluting the VW buyer’s cost.

Tesla is going straight at the owner with this scam.

This is the case. VW got HAMMERED for it to. I know criminal charges were involved. Recalls, motor swaps, all kinds of shit. I bet it cost them 10s of billions. I had a 2011 Audi that had an engine swap.

The interesting thing is it was all caught because of a govt grant to a college to test emissions during normal driving conditions and VW failed miserably so they had to figure out what was going on.

I kind of find this hard to believe because it's so easily verifiable. Like how dumb does Tesla have to be to think people wouldnt notice this? On road trips I'll often balance my odometer reading with knowing when I need to look for my exit.

Probably not noticeable on interstate driving… would only make sense to “add mileage” in slow and idling traffic, and it appears that guy in the video was driving slow on purpose….

if only we had a federal agency to investigate and prosecute thsi kind of fraud.

If trump can redefine words I guess he will let Elon redefine what a mile is.

if true, and the car does not measure a mile as 5280 lineal feet and that algorithmic way of defining a mile is not disclosed anywhere, they are cooked. just my uninformed opinion

It’s amazing to watch Elmo Musk blow up Tesla like one of those Starship rockets of his. He has taken Tesla from a once respected company to pariah in the span of a year. In the process he’s exposed himself to be a fool, fraud, and just a plain old weirdo. And MAGA won’t come to his rescue and start buying his “green new deal vehicles.” MAGA loves them gas guzzlers.
At what point does Tesla stock become worthless? Will he be fired from his own company?
Good thing he has all of our tax dollars to fall back on…

Also, I dont know about recent Tesla owners, but lots of long time owners are nerds and engineers, who are exactly the type of people to obsess about things like tire pressure, data, numbers and optimization.

Would probably depend on the coding being subpoenad. Otherwise they can just claim it was a mistake and not intentional, unlike VW. Once they got the coding VW was cooked.
