NCAA announces rule changes connected to faking injuries during games hope it works but doubt it will
I don’t like this at all because it’s too big of a penalty for real injuries. Would have much preferred one of the ideas the brain trust on this forum came up with. Just make them sit out the rest of the possession. If they’re really hurt, they’d be out anyway. If they’re not, they can’t help their team anymore on that drive. Why weren’t we consulted?
Lol. Since we can’t control NIL, we should concentrate on more almost irrelevant things that have little chance of succeeding so it can appear we are making progress. Next up, euthanizing all MISSISSIPPI STATE fans who think cowbells are a musical instrument to be played ad nauseum at football games.
I agree. I must be missing something. This sounds insane. If a player is injured you are charged a timeout, until they're all gone, and then assessed a 5-yard delay of game penalty for every injury? Is that the rule or did I misread? Edit: It must be to allow TV more commercial breaks. Sorry, I know that sounds cynical.
Sitting them for the rest of the possession has been a wildly popular suggestion. Surely this idea came across the desk of the powers that be? Ready, Fire, Aim.
I don’t even think it needed to be that extreme. Just needed a push in the right direction. This is like amputating the leg because of a fresh splinter in your big toe. Lol
I’d say look at the rule more closely. It says once the ball is spotted. So I think that’s probably the common theme. I read the ESPN article on it and it seems like there’s some analytics to it. I feel like if you’re actually hurt, it’s noticed before the ball is spotted
I think you missed the part where this only applies if the trainers treat a player after the ball is spotted. In theory, if a player is really injured on a play they go down immediately and the refs spot the injury before spotting the ball and stop the game before this would come into effect. Where this is flawed IMO is when the refs spot the ball before seeing a player was injured, or when a player goes down late to stop the game but then gets up and leaves on his own power (i.e. medical personnel never enter the field).
Seems to me the "sit out for the rest of the possession" suggestion (or some version of that) solves the vast majority of the cases. Why can't the NCAA use some common sense?
Agreed. Maybe they didn't want something that targets the individual player who may be acting under orders from a coach... This instead punishes the team which is probably the intent. This rule seems flawed but I'm willing to give it a chance and see if it works or not.
And then it also doesn't stop the cheaters from signaling in on the previous play to stop the game by the designated player to stay down at the whistle. Meanwhile players actually hurt could play another down or downs when they should have been examined out of fear of a team penalty. It won't work and could hurt players.
So they cheat and sit out if its worth it? Let the least important player fake an injury third and goal at the one with ten seconds left? I say if there less than three minutes in the game, stay off the field the rest of the game or rub some dirt on it. Its becoming reminiscent of soccor.
How about a minimum of 10 consecutive snaps on the sideline, or else the team loses a TO or if they have run out of them, a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty? It seems pretty easy to me.
