those that think any type of gun restrictions would have stopped this guy would be wrong- this guy is full of hate and gun restrictions would not have stopped him from killing- he should be locked up and the key thrown away
It didn’t take long for this thread to go sideways. Maybe it wasn’t a Dem or Pub’s fault. And when did prayer become a bad thing? It’s disappointing that THFSG has come to this point. Discussion does not exist anymore.
This is irrelevant. Politicians Republicans prevent any and all rational gun laws from being enacted. Let's take some low-hanging fruit : in many places an 18 year-old cannot drink ...... but can buy an AR-15. Good, safe policy? There are many things possible that are both rational and productive. And they are ALWAYS prevented. So is this an "irresponsible owner" case, where rational regulation may not have helped? Perhaps. And it doesn't change the big picture.
I’ve suggested separating these threads into those for snark and jokes to separate from the information, but I may be on an island as far as that goes. I think some are posting useful information and Helix offers a useful question to contemplate. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
If he had evidence of mental illness, then it’s something to consider. I think that should only come up if the parents brazenly ignore some serious threats or mental episodes or neglect to get them treatment (i.e. like those Michigan parents). But this isn’t a 5 year old or 10 year old where you automatically blame the parent for letting a child get hold of a weapon. It’s an adult. It’s just an unfortunate coincidence it was the son of a law enforcement officer imo. I don’t think that has any special relevance.
Those same 18 year olds can enter into contracts, get drafted or enlist in the military, register to vote, are charged as adults in crimes, etc. They are adults in the legal sense. If they are adults they should be entitled to all the rights afforded adults. If you want to talk about raising the age of majority, I think that is a better discussion to have. But passing laws that encroach on fundamental rights just because you feel like guns are bad is not the way to actually create good policy. The second amendment is a thing and it isn’t going anywhere. and fwiw, I’m not willing to chalk it up to “irresponsible gun owner” either. It’s easy to make judgments in hindsight but the problem with crazy and deranged people is they often become very good at acting fairly normal until they do something terrible. By many accounts, this was an individual who was involved in service organizations, etc. Unless we get some information that the parents could have reasonably foreseen this and did not take efforts to secure their guns, responsibility lies with the adult who actually did the shooting.
We must protect Jewish students from antisemitism by defunding the universities, deporting students on visas, and eliminate DEI. Meh about guns.
LOL, that sure was a lot of words. Ever hear of the Gish Gallup? Most data shows, and people agree, that the country is better off without 18 year-olds drinking. It would certainly be the same if they weren't allowed to purchase AR-15s. Similarly, increased training requirements would probably help. Might be able to convince some of those teenage purchasers not to buy guns for their Columbine high school friends. Or parents not to leave unsecured weapons accessible to their Sandy Hook shooting kid. Obvious stuff.
If someone built a CECOT for guns to be rendered to, conservatives might actually start to care about something.
Just learned that the shooter is a good Christian Republican who liked to quote the bible on social media... that should make the Ts&Ps even more effective, right?
No it’s not irrelevant. In this case, it certainly looks like stricter gun laws would have had absolutely no effect. You can’t ignore that.
