    Well… AmeriCorps is a U.S. government-funded program that engages people in public service work to help communities across the country. Think like a "domestic Peace Corps." They were just decimated this week due to changes in objectives.

    Volunteers work in programs that focus on things like education, disaster relief, poverty reduction, public health, and environmental conservation. In exchange for their service, members usually get a small living stipend and can earn an education award to help pay for college or pay off student loans. Not any more.


    DOGE Cuts Pull AmeriCorps Volunteers Off of Disaster Relief Jobs
    Workers for the National Civilian Community Corps were sent home due to “new operational parameters.” The program’s long-term fate is unclear.

    AmeriCorps, the US federal agency that oversees volunteerism and service work, abruptly pulled teams of young people out of a variety of community service projects across the country on Tuesday. The work stoppage was due to cuts attributed to the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, volunteers were informed Tuesday afternoon.

    Remember this whenever some Republican tries to say "We have to take care of our own people first" to justify cuts to important aid for people in other countries. It isn't about having more resources to take care of our own.

    My wife did Americorp for 2 years. Helped a bunch of people get their GEDs. An incredibly impactful program for the community. She was paid a living stipend, something like 10k a year in the early 2000s. Super impactful use of government money.

    Do you support the tax cuts scheduled to expire in December actually ending or do you want those tax cuts renewed?

    These are pretty important programs with a history of helping people. There are many many conservatives who have served this organization.

    Interesting feedback, thanks.

    In my limited experience, these programs can be life-changing, not for all but for many — both participants….and staff. It’s often those unfamiliar or who’ve had an easier path who dismiss AmeriCorps. Hard to imagine anyone who’s walked in your wife’s shoes saying, ‘let them eat cake.’

    Good for your wife.

    I love how President continues to cut wasteful spending. I know some our libbies will claim people won't be taken care of, but we know that's a lie. I'm sure some that was cut will get rehired but like most Government run agencies loads of waste.
    The whining that comes from you libbies is very annoying
