Every day walking across campus I am monitoring for facial expressions, points of entry, long coats, turning around corners etc. Sure school shootings are a statistical anomaly, but the consequences are so dire. Hoping for the best toward our frienemies in Tallahassee.
I’m mocking people who think saying “thoughts and prayers” after every mass shooting is the only solution to the problem.
That has become one of the most vapid phrases in modern parlance. Almost code for " I don't give a shit" ( which since actions speak louder than words, society really doesn't give a shit). When's the next one?
I think people expect leaders to have something to say that expresses sorrow and grief; maybe folks who express this are doing so in a hollow manner (maybe not), but I sincerely doubt that anybody treats this as "the only solution to the problem" or even a "solution" at all. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
I don't think they are saying that as "the only solution to the problem", but as a means of comfort for those who are suffering. To discount the intent of someone else is egotistical and mean-spirited. Whether those same people can do something about the reason for the violence is a completely different topic.
They would have to want a solution first for them to treat it like one. Its just the only thing they can say in what is their ideal society when it comes to gun ownership.
I'd rather have leaders that express solutions rather than posting "thoughts and prayers". That's what leaders are supposed to do. Any moron can pray.
Something can be done. America is the only country where this regularly happens. Praying apparently doesn't work. So let's try something else.
While, personally, I've never seen the point of expecting leaders to say something profound about a tragic situation, I would be incredibly naïve to not recognize that many/most people actively look for such a thing. It seems to have meaning to a lot of people, and if it were absent, people would wonder why there wasn't a pause to at least reflect on the tragedy itself. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
Where were the mass shootings 50+ years ago when almost everyone owned a gun. Even kids, like me and my friends. Let's not pretend that this isn't societal problem, chief.
What, in your view, is the function of prayer? Is it your view that prayer exists to remove all the wrong doing in the world? Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
The murder rate was far higher 55 years ago than it is now. We had serial killers instead of mass killers. The US was exceptionally violent for a developed country 50+ years ago as well.
What about mass shootings, which was the topic here? Afterall, that is the left's go to when arguing against the second amendment. Doesn't Chicago have the strictest gun laws in the country?
