What does college have yo do with any of this mess now? I wouldn't be surprised if there's a law suit from someone that claims discrimination based on the fact they aren't or can't pass a litmus test to attend the school and the decision isn't skill based. College football is dead if you think about it.

Many meatheads played football at institutions of higher learning long before nil. Its not all that different really.

Agreed, but nothing surprises me when lots of money is at stake nowadays.

Money is bigger but the same principles. The main difference is the portal. Its a much bigger issue than how much boosters are willing to get soaked for, thats their problem.

Not just football, sadly. Colleges running pro sports leagues is ridiculous. It is completely out of the purview of their mission of educating young people.

Direct payments to players is an order of magnitude different....and now all colleges and universities will need to do it to keep any semblance of competitiveness. At least in the past it was only the most corrupt that made sure that players were "paid."

It will become (quickly) just another pro sports league. If you like pro sports, that is fine, I guess. Its just not my cup of tea. Unfortunately, amateurism in the U.S. is deader than a door nail. No worries though, I have plenty of stuff to do around the house to keep me busy when I used to enjoy college football and basketball season. I still don't think universities and colleges have any business doing this and should be taxed accordingly.

The good teams are still good and the bad teams are still bad for the most part. The lower divisions, Ivey league, and others play truly amateur sports but no one is actually interested in that. We want to see Tebow's play. The portal is whats causing so much problems. To me, we are mostly just seeing it for what it really is. Golden did a great job of getting unselfish players that really cared about each other and fought together. Of course they were paid but they had a strong bond as teammates. Paid mercenaries that care only for themselves and money isnt a recipe for winning. Its a mess for sure and there needs to be some balance. Fred Taylor several years ago said he got 50k from Georgia. I highly doubt he received nothing to come to UF. Common sense would say there was much more to come from Georgia. Money isnt new and the speculation of how much has been changing hands isnt really what has most of us bothered. Its tge portal and the instability. Imalieaver would still be a Vol a few short years ago and thats the biggest issue to me.

So UGAG gave him 50K and he still came to UF? Bet they were mad about that since he probably didn't give the money back.
It's not like they could complain.. hey, we gave you some illegal money, give it back!

Well I don't think they are going to retro actively suspend him and I'm sure all good players back then got cash. Miami comes to mind, as well as us, FSU and the rest of the SEC.

If your team was in the top 5 or 10, you were paying players.

That horse left the barn far before NIL with ncaa not enforcing rules, virtually no entry requirements for players, players not allowed to take majors that interfere with athletics, and the ‘ under the table’ payments everyone ignored. Only difference now is it is open bidding and the portal, but the soul of major college sports died long ago. I still root for the gators but any notion that the major sport athletes were there as students was lost to me in the 80s.
