No, like medical supplies, medicine and steel.

Speaking of steel, the acquisition of US Steel by Nippon Steel would have gone a long way towards preserving jobs in steel production in the US and possibly even increasing them. The proposed acquisition was opposed by both Trump and Biden and blocked by the latter.

Even that deal is not immune to Trump's inability to stick to anything for more than a few days

The tariffs are coming for big Pharma outside the States. We cannot be held hostage by China or any other country when it comes to this industry. The media are about to go crazy once we announce this.

I see alot of people bitching about drugs coming in from China, and while i agree this is an area we don’t want to rely on foreign sources (esp China), some of our production in recent years was destroyed by Hurricanes and consequently the industry has faced on again-off again drug shortages for years. The increased imports is to fill shortages in a lot of cases. So many people have no clue about any of this. Puerto Rico in particular was a major domestic producer of U.S. pharmaceuticals. Probably a dumb idea to concentrate domestic production on an island like that, I believe it was for tax reasons. I think we need to get rid of tax incentives which create economic perversions or for tax avoiders to concentrate in a particular territory… but especially if that area of critical production is in the bullseye of hurricanes!

More recently there has been chronic shortage of IV bags. Why? These were produced in a facility in North Carolina destroyed by Hurricane Helene last year. Consequently, hospitals have been having to import bags from China.

Not sure when production of these sterile IV bags is expected to be back online (Baxter is the name of the company that produces them), but in a situation like this where domestic production is temporarily offline tariffs will create critical shortages and rationing. It’s just pure stupidity.
