RS Freshman Greg Smith to the Portal

Ah, it starts.

The two HS safeties are doing well. Smith is probably thinking he's going to lose his spot on the depth chart. Could happen at a few other spots too- OT, edge, RB?!?

 

My thinking at edge is Woods may jump a couple guys and maybe they don't like it. Hopefully not, there's enough PT for the entire group. We'll see.

 

Hate to see Smith go but, I’m sure he has his reasons. As much as I dislike the portal it does provide players who think they may not see much playing time unless there are injuries, options.
Whatever Smith’s reasons for leaving, he nevertheless gave us valuable depth last year in an injury riddled secondary and he didn’t throw any shoes so I wish him well..

 

It would be interesting to see who the odd man out on the edge would be.

 

Hopefully no one.

 

With the injuries we saw last year on the back end, you would think guys would stick around. Granted we have no way of knowing who's in his ear at other schools either so...

 

Maybe he could have improved throughout the year and have a firm focus for next year, but in this era of instant gratification with impunity, it is what it is. I hope you enjoyed your stay at my alma mater.

Kind of a problem at this level when you are a Swiss Army knife in HS.

 

Apparently Smith didn't like his NIL number.

 

Gotta cash in before the old guys who bribe 18 year olds to play sports for their school are dead.

 

We have a ton of young talent in that safety room. Dude wants to play somewhere. Good luck to him.

$22M in direct payments from the school per year beginning in July says "Who cares about the old guys."

 

Maybe Smith is regretting his decision after seeing the remaining secondary get shredded by journeyman QB's in the Spring game.

 

I guess that makes the boosters contributions tax deductible? It doesn't really change anything else I don't think?

Welp. Perhaps having entered the portal(?) or telegraphing his interest in a better deal, he had some offers back channeled. If he all of a sudden signs somewhere, that's likely the case.
