Trump wants to revive coal. The energy sector has moved on
"Coal won't return to the heights it once had in America. That's simply not the world we live in," said Collin Rees, the U.S program manager for the advocacy group Oil Change International.

Coal accounted for 16.2 percent of U.S. electricity generation in 2023, down from approximately 50 percent two decades ago, according to the latest available data from the Energy Information Administration.

Renewables now make up 21.4 percent of the electricity mix, federal data shows. (Nuclear accounts for another 18.6 percent, and natural gas makes up 43.1 percent of electricity generation).

Coal's decline coincided with a fracking boom that sharply increased the domestic production of natural gas, a relatively cheap fossil fuel that produces lower greenhouse gas emissions than coal. The clean energy sector also expanded steadily under policies put in place by former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden to lower emissions and combat climate change.

If Trump wants to revive coal he can always outlaw fracking for natural gas.

"beautiful clean coal" - said by dear leader.

Looks like we are going back to the 1930s, in economy size too.

He's for all of the above (energy) without tipping the scales with financial incentives towards one or another.

Germany and China, among other nations, are still busy building brand-new coal firing plants at this very moment. We have more coal than any country on Earth, so it makes sense to use what we have. All of the above.

Germany is most definitely not building new coal-fired power plants. They restarted some defunct ones upon Russia's invasion. China and India account for almost 90% of all "new" coal in the world. It's basically those two countries and that's it. About a dozen others combine for the other 10%. Germany is phasing it out entirely by 2038 and are even moving the kill-date for lignite up to 2035.

BTW, China has more solar and wind capacity than coal. Even with the new plants. Something the US still can't pull off. Then again China has to supply power for a billion more people than the US, so they will have to take some low-hanging fruit and just suffer the consequences until they can switch to full-time replacement instead of explosive expansion. This is where the US is and it is beyond shameful that we can't execute this relatively simple transition.

And yes, while the the Stable Genius gets the cultists' heads a bobbin' in agreement that "windmills" cause cancer, he does indeed pick the nastiest, deadliest fuel ever known to man to "revive" even as the market is telling him it is over. The only way to "revive" it is to artificially subsidize it as a "winner", which I suspect is exactly what these morons will do.

good golly you libs are so damned negative- the doom and gloom must weigh heavily on you - we still need coal, wind power is a hoax - and solar is good but at this moment not great because it only works when the sun is shining - we need coal, oil and NG to power this country.

"Wind power is a hoax." Explain this. Do windmills not exist? Not produce power?

Also, do you know about this new technology called "batteries" that allow a person to store power until a period in which it was not generated?

At least you are consistently misinformed. You really should diversify your sources of information or find at least one. Your misinformation sources are solid though

Coal is rebounding because of the Democrat war on natural gas.

The price of natural gas also rose because the Democrats/US/NATO wanted war in Ukraine.

I was listening to POTUS (Sirius XM station - not the moron) and a Repug strategist was discussing how most of the Wind projects being defunded by Trump are in deeply red states and House Reps and Senators from those states are sklulking about the White House begging Trump to exempt their state from these cuts because they "need" wind power for cheap energy growth.

Nothing like cutting off their lying noses to spite the red-hat covered faces.

Make America Healthy Again through toxic rivers and acid rain from coal plants. Nothing is healthier than coal ash ponds seeping into groundwater and rivers.
