Trump Does his Awesome New Tariffs. Winning!!

Hooray, more inflation and making more government bureaucracy necessary. But, at least that bureaucracy will lose a bunch of money trying to charge a couple of bucks per package!

 

I can give you 4 reasons we see tariffs.
1. for a country like Uganda, it is a matter of practicality. They can collect tariffs pretty easily. Given the lack of sophistication of their economy, sales, income etc taxes are hard to enforce & collect.
2. National security. Freq quite abused as we've heard ludicrous args for tariffs based on "national security". But, it is - at least theoretically - a valid reason.
3. Support nascent industry.
4. BAD ECONOMIC POLICY. India has pursued Trump style import replacement policies for decades to disastrous results.

 

Of course. Every president has probably done some kind of narrow tariff in some small targeted area (like steel), so we'll hear about how all these people did tariffs, but now the libs are angry for some reason.

 

Without going into a full on econ lesson, a trade deficit isn't demonstratively bad on its own. In fact, it can be a positive sign for an economy.

oh, another thing. why does a rich country need to balance trade? What you don't hear much about, is that we run a capital account surplus with every country that we have a trade deficit with. Capital account surpluses lead to direct foreign investment in the US.

Tarrifs are a tool to be used to protect local industries. If done correctly they could be beneficial to the US. What Donald is doing is the complete opposite of smart. Business have been working for years cutting down cost of products to increase profit. And China, has been a great beneficiary of this as they supported this manufacturing shift. First they said build you products here, then they said design them here etc. it has been a huge transfer of wealth and knowledge out of the US.

Mine while the US corps have become fat cats pushing stocks higher and eroding the middle class.

After many years we have a trade imbalance as we are the largest consumer in the world. How do we fix this? Let's put a plan in place to recapture this wealth, which will take many years.

On the surface, I like the idea, but dear leader does not have any clue how to achieve this. His tariff ploy is short sided, will cause inflation, job losses, and a big recession if it last any length. Congress needs to put him in his place.

 

If we are looking at a country like Vietnam it’s because they are a poor/developing country and we are a rich mature economy. It pretty much is as simple as that. A lot of their population can’t even afford the goods they produce FOR the U.S., let alone import goods FROM the U.S. Its completely laughable to demand trade parity with 3rd world countries. It’s economic suicide. But hey I guess if you make the U.S. dirt poor as well through dumb isolationism that’s one way to solve immigration and trade deficits.

 

Exactly!!! Our goods have (perhaps had) the easiest access to worldwide consumption than perhaps any other country on the planet. This is because our manufacturers produce more than can be consumed domestically, and because our country has been the traditional leader of the free world which carries over influence to US goods. And this has been ongoing for a century, leaving our brands at the top of consumer preference. Once our supply to these nations of the rolls are replaced with substituted goods, and a new familiarity with these goods is attached, the demand for our goods will forever dissipate.

Worse, still, there is a high probability that the Country that replaces us will be our mortal trades enemy, China, who has the means and determination to replace the US supply.
