By: Nick Marcinko -- April 2, 2025 Sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway has been limited throughout spring camp while nursing a shoulder and an undisclosed lower body injury. Lagway took a few reps in Florida’s spring scrimmage on Tuesday, but did not throw the football, a reoccurring theme throughout spring practice. While Lagway may dress out for Florida’s spring game and even participate in a limited capacity, it’s not expected he throws a football at the annual Orange and Blue game on April 12th. “Dialed in”: DJ Lagway showing growth despite lack of throwing in spring camp | GatorCountry.com
The injuries are concerning. If he isn’t throwing in spring practice, is it expected that he’ll be anywhere close to 100% come September?
This seems like good news overall. The limitations this spring for Florida QB DJ Lagway have been worth noting coming into the period. However, Lagway is doing just fine in his modified action down in Gainesville. Billy Napier shared the latest on Lagway’s status during his press conference on Tuesday. He said he has been participating, including in their scrimmage that day, with them more so focusing on his processing and leadership while being limited to the extent that he is with matters involving his shoulder and lower body. “Yeah, he’s doing great,” said Napier. “He actually played quite a few plays today. Yeah, so, he was able to participate in the scrimmage, um. So he’s just been modified in terms of his ability to, to throw the ball. Obviously, you know, it’s, it’s really more of a holistic approach in terms of what we’re doing with him. But, in general, he’s, he’s doing great.” DJ Lagway injury update: Billy Napier shares latest status of Florida QB in spring practices
There has been some discussion that DJ not throwing during spring is indeed a red flag from a podcast I listened to last night. Rarely does a starter miss all spring without throwing especially when DJ is going into his second year. Speculation is that this is a recurring issue from either hs or last year in which DJ basically gutted it out. It was said (again speculation) that the plan is he will play this year and having surgery once the season ends. To save his shoulder his throwing will be greatly reduced. Again not throwing during spring ball raises lots of questions at the very least. If what I heard is true, we had better hope our second string qb is really good.
Accepting what was said in that podcast is true, why wouldn’t they have done the surgery this current off season?
To excel in sports, you need reps. Lots of reps. He isn't throwing the ball at all and has several new WR's that he should be working with. If surgery was required, why didn't that already happen? If it's something that can heal on its own, what is the time frame for it to heal? And what is "it"? I'm glad we have Harrison Bailey, Clay Millen and Aidan Warner, but is there a chance we will be portal shopping for another arm? Portal open April 16th and closes on the 25th. DJ has a gift and could be playing this sport for 20 more years. I'm sure no one wants to put his career on the line and do permanent damage to his arm. It just sucks b/c our roster looks really good.
Yikes...here we are again...another season of is Napier gonna make it. A Q needs reps to their WR and waiting to summer to figure this out seems super WEIRD! 5-7 season here we come if the news doesnt get better!
