They are still under sanction, and for the most part, their economy is in war mode not export mode, so they would be mostly pointless, but yeah, everyone knows why Israel, Russia and Hungary arent on the list

Let’s just boil this down to a national sales tax on products and 100% exemption for domestic manufactured. It’s a tax raise on consumption. We have been cutting income based taxes for 45 years. We needed to raise taxes. So what if it’s not an income tax? The wealthy consume. They get to pay it as well. It’s regressive in some ways, but progressive for high luxury goods.

Taking off my team jersey — why is this bad?

The wealthy dont buy more stuff than anyone else. They going to buy 10,000 pairs of Italian loafers each? 10,000 tons of imported coffee? There is only so much people can consume, and they tend to avoid it if the price makes it prohibitive.

    That is one example.

But a price insensitive wealthy would buy a Mercedes s550 or a Porsche 911 over a say a Volvo. So, the high priced item would attract a high tariff and a progressive tax.

Its not 'progressive,' its the same cost/tax for anyone. Its still a regressive tax.

The entire narrative is false, so there really isn't anyone to blame outside of maybe those who gave China a free ride.

Because - outside of China - it's unnecessary. Mexican manufacturing isn't a problem for us, it's an asset. You don't replace China with America alone. You'll need partners to pull that off.

    "Stuck"

Whatever. Willful choice when far better options were on the table. And you knew it then and you STILL supported him.

Seems like political malfeasance to label something “liberation day” that is quite likely to kick off a massive global recession. Its liberating Americans from the burdens of having money.

In a sane world this would be seen as crazy as W’s “Mission Accomplished”. But it’s a cult, and next week these same clowns might be on the side of free trade, so who knows.

Yes, since it is fixed rate based and not a variable rate. Thanks.

Are you enjoying the largest tax increase in history, which you voted for in order to avoid...tax increases?

It’s about 50-50 in my view they’ll be gone in a week. I don’t even think down 1200 captures what these tariffs do to the economy. Down 12,000 would be more appropriate. If the tariffs stay on Trump will get to recycle some of those hats he wore in his 1st term.
