I rated this post Winner! But at the same time I understand what Barkley was saying and was not offended by it at all. TT did everything right and had us against the ropes until the 37th minute. We played out of our freaking minds for 2 1/2 minutes to win it, obviously we finished 10 times better than them. But TT played a part in that they allowed us to take the game from them by failing over and over again with their every possession during that time. Charles has had us as favorites since we won the SECT and always has good stuff to say about us. His being a Tiger and our pending matchup adds a little intrigue to his commentary.
Chat Charles doesn’t bother me. He says a lot of BS but he understands the game and is pretty funny. Of course, he is an unabashed Auburn fan, as he should be. I don’t get too worked up over what these tv guys say. Many GC Nuttin But Netters know more about basketball than some of these talking heads. FYI, if you can find these, Phil McGraw did two outstanding interviews with Charles and Shaq (“Phil In the Blanks”) You can’t help but liking these two basketball greats after listening to these shows.
Exactly this, the talking heads have to fill up a lot of time when their total analysis would take maybe five minutes.
On your edit I guess you did NOT actually look to see the results if the game had the Elam ending in place. At the 4 minute mark the score was 71-64…..any guesses who the first team was to 78? That would be UF on Claytons 3 pointer to take the lead 78-77.
I think Sir Charles comment was in the context of- Texas Tech had it in their grasp to be won, and let it slip away. I think he also said something about he'd rather lose by 20 than lose by 1- knowing it was that close. Also- it's negligent not to add that at halftime Charles predicted we would win roll and TT wouldn't know what hit them. That obviously did not happen. So let's not act like Charles is some Gator hater but try to understand him in the context of his comments.
I was hoping that someone would do the math since I couldn't recall what the score was at the 4 min mark.
The better team did not lose if that team did not know how to close out the game.. Todd and the Gators got the better of them when it mattered..
I'm with you on this and would add that CB sees the game from a Big Man's POV. Their Bigs did a great job against us. TT played their hearts out but gave us an opening. Barkley's comments included how they gave away the game as much as we took it. That view, of course, minimizes TG's great coaching at the end. Barkley's comments, whether right or wrong, were not unfair.
In the 1980 Winter Olympics, was the Soviet Hockey Team better than the USA Hockey Team? The Commies had a good game plan, executed it well, but their best-in-the-world players were not enough - that night - to beat the USA Team. We don't debate which was the "better" team; there is this thing called a SCOREBOARD we tend to use to settle such questions. My question may only appeal to a certain demographic.
Georgia beat us this year. Would you call them a better team? It’s a silly thing to go around and around about, but the better team does not always win the game.
Are you kidding? Yes, they were the better team, before, during and after, objectively and subjectively. The fact that I detest Georgia down to the very last strand of my DNA doesn't alter that.
We agree to differ, respectfully. In my old profession, "Victory" or "Defeat" was the sole discriminator. The opponent may have been worthy, was valiant and skilled. That is the stuff of historians, to weigh factors, consider what-ifs. But if, at the end of the fight, I hold the field, that is the only thing that matters.
We were 1-1 against them this year and had a vastly superior season. There is no metric in the world that would say they had a better team than us this year. I just asked the two mutt fans in my phone if they had a better team than us this year, both want to know if I was hitting the pipe this morning. Ole Miss was also a better football team than us in 08, right? Lol
I'll take heroic efforts and the ball bouncing Florida's way to move on, just for one game, rather than being the "better" team
The season is a war. The better team doesn’t necessarily win every battle. Just as in war, the victor doesn’t always win every battle. Holding the field after a single battle doesn’t make you the victor of the war.
LOL. I was thinking "football", when you asked if Georgia was the better team, for some reason. I guess I'm stinging from their recent dominance in that sport. I'll be quiet and wait to run in to you in a bar then we can happily discuss it over a drink.
