What is meant by "mesh" here? I'm guessing we're not talking about the actual mesh play since we ran that some last season so are we talking about more "combo" type routes, e.g. smash, etc?

Brandon Olson has been talking about UF running more mesh plays with Callaway.

Yeah that looks better. I actually presented it like a question, but failed to punctuate it as such.

Mesh whatever you want to mesh but make it end up with 7 and not 3 at the end of the drive and were all happy.

IMO, Napier likes guys who are beholden to him and not someone who brings their game to the table (see FSU and Gus or OSU and Kelly). The, um, "guarantee" they are beholden is to find nice but young coaches who are excited for the opportunity to coach in the major league minors. Roberts was a sort of find that turned out pretty good. Most likely because he realized that Armstrong was over his head (we shall see) and needed some mature wisdom.

It also helps that we are talking about defense, for I presume Napier is sort of listening but not involved. Now on offense, that is an entirely different matter. Napier has real skin in the game. And in order to make sure that area isn't being hijacked, he desires some coaches who can bend in his direction.

To me, THE biggest brain fart, although I do not know of any nuanced discussions and whatnot, was that Napier did not offer Jeff Scott the OC position when he was fired by USF. Napier has some convictions...and some large blind spots. We shall see whether the offense with Lagway gives him some political cover, because Napier needs some BAD.

This is talking season. Talking, innuendo, rumor, etc. We hope it turns out Callaway is an offensive genius whose time has come.

This was a really good question. I didn’t know UF runs a play called “mesh”.

For a more detailed reply, what I’m talking about is the concept of mesh routes. My basic understanding of mesh is a pick play. It’s nothing new. The two WR crisscross (pick) pattern is as basic as it gets. What’s happened over the years is the play has become more advanced with multiple sets. I’m a Packer fan, they’ve been running multiple mesh patterns since the Favre days in the 90s.

Specifically for UF in 2025, some of the analysts are saying Callaway is implementing more mesh concepts into the offense. Olsen has talked about it a lot. Cam Parker mentioned it, too. On YouTube, Olsen actually has some whiteboard breakdowns on the different plays. I’ve just heard him talk about it.

LSS, this will bring some diversity to the short and intermediate pass routes.

Sounds like we are indeed talking about variations on classic "mesh," e.g. diagram below. We did run some mesh last year, if we're doing more this year then the air raid enjoyers should be pleased.

Yep, Olson said the same thing about the air raid concepts.

A lot of the complaints about CBNs offense are the limited options in the passing game when the deep ball is covered. From what I understand Calloway's changes addresses that specific issue.

I think we will know if our offense is different after a few 3rd and longs...if we hand it off or run the wr screen on 3rd and 17 you know it isnt and turtle ball is still the teams offensive MO.
