Because we are not a conquering nation willing to use our power to forcefully take what we want? Are you seriously okay with invading Greenland? Really..
I like the PFD concept especially if it would increase as a percentage of any and all mined resources when extracted. I believe there are sound business solutions to meet all 'national security' needs without the sinister strong arm approach.
We already have a military base in Greenland and, if necessary, it would probably be a hell of lot easier and cheaper to negotiate expanding that base than threatening to conquer Greenland. That’s what NATO is about, and why keeping good relations with the countries is important. That’s also why I think this more about taking their resources than needing a military base….
Yes, but Trump has no idea of that whatsoever. He probably thinks he's struck upon a bold strategic ploy. Of course, he also could just be thinking of things that would make a nice present for his friend Vlad.
Good grief, guys. Putin gets to take over other places. Do we really want our president to look weak? Of course not. Give the poor guy Greenland!
I persist in arguing that it’s an irrelevant question at the present. If Greenland were interested in joining us, and Denmark was acquiescent, then a national debate on why this was in our interest would be appropriate. Since neither are, it does not matter how great our perceived need is.
Denmark has been an excellent ally so taking Greenland should not be a priority. Although NATO stupidly set the precedent by allowing Kosovo to separate from "Russia's little brother" Serbia after the people of Kosovo voted for independence. Russia returned the favor by annexing Crimea (Crimeans voted to be annexed). We need Greenland for bases that can be used to project nuclear powered icebreakers into the Arctic as part of a plan to discover oil and natural gas. The Arctic has roughly 1/8 of the world's undiscovered oil and almost 1/3 of the undiscovered natural gas. Russia has ~36 icebreakers. The US has 2, according to 1 article I read. Nuclear powered icebreakers are the way to go imo
Fun facts: Greenland is only 26% larger than Alaska. Germany is smaller than Montana. England is smaller than Alabama.
