By: Eric Fawcett -- March 27, 2025 The passion, energy, enthusiasm, and toughness of the Florida Gators was once again on full display on Thursday as they rallied in the second half and pulled away from the Maryland Terrapins coming away with a massive 87-71. It wasn’t always pretty, but in a way–that’s what made this win so impressive for the Gators. This was a Maryland team that has been playing excellent basketball as of late and has a number of talented players, and Florida didn’t exactly play their A-game–and they still won by 16. The 87 points Maryland allowed was their highest of the entire season, and the 16 point loss was by far and away their biggest margin of defeat; as shockingly, all eight of their previous losses came by 6 points or less. Lol... I just posted on another thread about Maryland not losing to any team by more than 6 points... until they played the Gators. This Gator Team is special.
When they are on, they are far and away the best team in the tournament. And what's more impressive is even when they aren't on, they're still the best team in the country.
I find myself wondering if they could beat the 2006-2007 team. Who has a bigger motor: Noah or Haugh? Who shoots the open 3 better: Clayton or Humphrey? Clayton is clearly superior because he creates his own shot and can score in dozen different ways! Today's team has terrific athletic bigs that run the floor much like the '04s. But they seemed to score more in the paint, they could muscle in and score from short range. And their defense was unbelievable! I don't think any team scored much more than 70 points against us in 12 tournament games! Just checked, in '06 Villanova scored 62 points, all other teams got 60 or less! In '07, we allowed 77 vs Oregon and 75 in the final vs Ohio State! No other team got out of the 60's!
I think the 04s played a bit slower than these Gators. I recall KenPom mentioning that 07 Gators were letting their opponents score, but it didn’t matter because of how well Florida was scoring. I’m not sure this group would be the 04s, but that would be one fun game to watch. As would a matchup against the 2000 run and gun gators.
Chins on Horford Condo on Noah Haugh on Brewer Martin on Humphrey Clayton Jr on Green Pretty good matchups across the board Bench: Richard, Micah, Aberdeen, etc - might be a deeper bench than the 06/07 team
