A Florida law was signed in 2023 requiring employers with more than 25 employees that checks their immigration status using a federal database known as E-Verify. Employers who don’t comply with the law face fines of $1,000 per day until they provide proof that their workers are legal citizens.

“Yes, we had people that left because of those rules, but you’ve also been able to hire other people. And what’s wrong with expecting our young people to be working part-time now? I mean, that’s how it used to be when I was growing up,” DeSantis also said during the panel discussion.

The state has been easing up on child labor protections for years. Last year, the legislature passed a law allowing home-schooled 16- and 17-year old teens to work any hour of the day.

The state’s Republican-led legislature on Tuesday will debate the new law, which also includes a number of changes including eliminating working time restrictions on teenagers aged 14 and 15 if they are home-schooled and ending guaranteed meal breaks for 16 and 17 year olds.

At this point they should drop the age to 6 years old. Parents shouldn't have to pay for their living expenses. If kids want to eat then they need to work.

"Free state of Florida" where children are free to work and employers are free not to allow you a water or meal break

But only if you "home school" them and collect the appropriate educational stipend

Yuck, yuck, yuck! Old Ron is quite a character, isn’t he? This part had me screaming in laughter :”And what’s wrong with expecting our young people to be working part-time now? I mean, that’s how it used to be when I-was growing up,”. Lol! I see Ron has spent zero time around Gen Alpha! Yuck, yuck, hard work for the selfie generation? Man, he cracks me up!

Nothing wrong with part time jobs, which is the system we already have. But this sounds like it wants them to work closer to full time hours and have “homeschooled” kids working during the day. That’s messed up, as is the reasoning. The doing away with meal/water breaks requirements is just impossible to understand. They did that earlier to construction/ag workers as I recall. These are sick, sick people.

Yeah a 15 yr old is just like a 6 year old.

Not sure what the laws were in 1983 but I had numerous jobs that didn’t get meal breaks even if the shift was 6 hours long. Didn’t kill me and that was after being in school all day.
Seems like the carve out is for home schooled kids, not all the masses.

I also didn’t see where this is specifically designed to fill jobs left open due to e-verify.

The carve out is for home school only? I'm curious to know where you're seeing that.
