Wow, Trump is causing turmoil in and changes to the government of Canada:

Canadian PM Mark Carney announces election as he seeks mandate to tackle Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a federal election in a widely anticipated move where he met with Governor-General Mary Simon on Sunday to request for Parliament to be dissolved.

“I’m asking Canadians for a strong, positive mandate to deal with President [Donald] Trump and to build a new Canadian economy that works for everyone because I know we need change,” Carney said on Sunday of the ongoing trade war with the United States.

The election will be held on April 28 and will see Carney face off against his main rival, the Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.

Before President Trump took office, what tariffs did Canada impose on U.S. goods, and what percentages were there on various products exported to the US?

Before January 1st, Canada had tariffs on certain U.S. products, primarily in sectors protected under its supply management system. These included:

    • Dairy Products: Tariffs ranged from 200% to 300% on items like milk, cheese, and butter to protect Canadian dairy farmers.
    • Poultry and Eggs: Similar high tariffs were applied to chicken, turkey, and eggs.
    • Grain Products: Some grains faced tariffs, though these were generally lower than those on dairy and poultry.
these are just a few of the HUGE tasriff's Canada imposed upon US goods

Fact check time. Those tariffs only kick in if and when Canada hits certain quantities of US imported goods. For most of the goods, Canada doesn't even hit 50% of said quantity on an annual basis. And until Canada reaches the quantity when tariffs kick in, most items are tariff free.

By the way. Know who negotiated the agreement with Canada with these tariffs. Trump during his first term.

Can you explain to me how Tariffs would lower prices using economic theory?

This is just silly. Did Biden impose a single NEW tariff on Canada outside of what was already agreed under new NAFTA/USMCA?

He did slap some extra tariffs on China, for example. 100% tariffs on Chinese EV’s to keep them out of U.S. market. But don’t think that was the case with Canada. Canada is not a threat, they are an ally, so getting into trade spats with them at all is stupid. Most of that is basically the status quo from NAFTA, protections for some ag interests on both sides of the border, which ironically Trump “renegotiated” in 2020 when he threatened to blow up NAFTA then basically signed NAFTA 2.0. I guess that best trade deal evah is no good now, just 5 years later?

Just focusing on dairy products. The 200% plus tariffs only apply to exports to Canada above a certain level. That level has never been reached and it was under the terms of the agreement negotiated by Trump in 2018 that Canada was allowed to impose those tariffs and by the way that agreement called the USMCA was lauded by Trump using language to the effect that it was the greatest trade agreement ever.
    • US doesn’t hit level of tariff-free sales for 200%-plus tariffs to kick in
    • Trump negotiated the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement in 2018
    • US has ‘never gotten close’ to exceeding quotas: Dairy groups

    Toronto tariffs incoming

Canada deals a blow to Tesla and Musk

The city of Toronto has decided to withdraw public funding for Elon Musk's Tesla cars.

US President Donald Trump had called for the annexation of Canada in addition to a tariff tax on Canadian products, and the reactions haven't been long in coming. In Toronto, there will be no more taxis, no more rental cars, no more Tesla ride shares; financial aid will end for the company led by Elon Musk.

trump - uniting people against america worldwide. he know how to bring people together, find a common enemy. foreigners, waste, fraud, corruption, criminals, justify anything by saying it is to defeat your common enemy and tell your cult not to question your wisdom.

Sadly that appears to be some still very expensive egg on Bill's face with his self-own link to Canadian tariffs.

That's just one sector--agriculture. And it's kind of an important sector as far as, you know, survival. Obviously, they did not want to be dependent on U.S. agriculture. Canadian agriculture cannot compete on price with U.S. farms (obviously), but they still felt they needed their own agriculture, in case U.S. supplies got contaminated, bird flu, snowstorms, etc.

Is Trump limiting his tariffs on Canada to just one (critical) sector? No, he's not.

Did the same tariffs cause shit on them? I know you say they’re bad because the view, and morning Jo, said so, but can we just wait and see. Lots of new invested coming in. I’m sure it’s to rape the poor, but what if we just wait and see?

Nope, that is pretty unintelligible too. Let's go back to your first post. What in the heck does this mean:

And while not an MD (that is a reference to the state), I do have a fair amount of PhD level work in economics, so feel free to explain it with the technical details.
