Welcome. Can never have enough Gator fans, especially Gator softball fans. My advice - Wear Orange & Blue and yell a lot!!! Most of all, have a blast.

I know in baseball, we quickly went from a 16-14 projection and getting swept by Tennessee to a 12-18 projection and taking 1 of 2 from the Vols.

    Go GATORS!

Exactly the right way and welcome. Enjoy Gainesville! Let us know your other hopes for the trip and I am sure plenty will offer advice.

I would begin by suggesting you try out the Herlong Mansion in Micanopy and The Yearling Restaurant for a real Florida experience. A Gator experience would include a trip To Spurrier's Grill in Gainesville.

If we knew what series, it would help. The Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma series are hot tickets. You can get tickets, but they may be pricey. If this is a bucket list, that may not matter.

Some more details, and we will be glad to help you.

I'm just warning you: Do not drink the beer, you will hate it, and drive on the right side of the road. ;)

Others can chime in with more, but one thing I would point out for someone from the UK…the later into the spring you come, the hotter it’s going to be. The last few series are likely going to be really hot temps for you if you aren’t used to it. Just be prepared.

    Monday

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!!

We have tickets for the Arkansas series (will probably still be too warm for me )

We have a few days in Gainesville and so far plans consisted of (lots of) softball! The Florida museum and a trip to the nature trails (let's see how the nature compares to Scotland!)

Your post with keep me "right" with the driving

If anyone has any advice if there are better or other things we should prioritise, let me know!

    Thanks! Eilidh

What nature trails? Paynes Prarie is not far and has lots of walking and biking. You have Kanapaha botanical gardens only a few miles from the stadium too. Our nature trails are full of mosquitos, alligators, and snakes. Guessing they'll be a little different from Scotland. :)

    Right here
Thanks guys. You are definitely correct that models based on 50 games of data will be more reliable than those based on 20 games.

However, there also appears to be something independent going on with Nolan’s prediction function. As you say, a team’s ELO should bounce around a bit at this point, but a team’s future prospects should not to bounce around without ELO changing. Future predictions should be based on power ratings (and home field advantage), so seeing the same two teams at the same location expected to battle to completely different outcomes can’t be explained by lack of input data only. As I pointed out above, Massey’s ratings are not doing this, instead repeatedly predicting the same outcome to the same game. It looks more like Nolan has a simulator and is randomly populating the outcomes from independent runs of the simulator (something I can’t imagine any statistician actually doing).

That's a heck of a weekend to be in town for GATOR sports (just in case you want to stick your head in elsewhere):

    4/3 (THU): 5:00 PM - Men's Tennis vs. Georgia
4/4 (FRI): 6:00 PM - Softball vs. Arkansas
4/4 (FRI): 6:30 PM - Baseball vs. Vanderbilt
4/4 (FRI): FLORIDA Relays (Track) - not sure the timing of the events, but it feels like they compete in everything for 48 hours straight
4/5 (SAT): 10:00 AM - Women's Lacrosse vs. San Diego State
    4/5 (SAT): 12:00 PM - Men's Tennis vs. Tennessee
4/5 (SAT): 4:00 PM - Baseball vs. Vanderbilt
4/5 (SAT): 5:00 PM - Softball vs. Arkansas
    4/5 (SAT): FLORIDA Relays (Track)
4/6 (SUN): 12:00 PM - Baseball vs. Vanderbilt
4/6 (SUN): 2:00 PM - Softball vs. Arkansas

    Go GATORS!

I honestly don't follow any of them. Just watch the games and learn what's going to happen in real time. I just know that all the preseason and early season models, polls, projections, and whatever can't have enough data to be very accurate. At the end of the season they're still trying to predict the future, but at least they have some useful data to base their assumptions on.

Great weekend! Excellent performance and coaching against a strong opponent. Pitching staff will match anybody’s! Watch out when hitting line up settles in. This team really, really is exciting.

Welcome to Gator Nation! I hope you and the family have a wonderful experience. I’m actually quite jealous lol. I live in Florida and have yet to make it to a softball game. Hopefully I can arrange for a babysitter and see a few games this season. Maybe during the Arkansas series!

My wife & I love these 2 parks. Take a picnic and enjoy. You can do the first in a couple of hours, then 3-4 hours for Sweetwater.

My 2 favorite Gainesville restaurants are Northwest Grille & Wahoo Seafood Grill. The link to Wahoos comes up on their Daily Specials page and they're all good.

Again I’ll say hats off to Tori Vidales. She was very classy and professional this past weekend. The dude got on my nerves a bit but overall they did a great job. That’s often not the case with so many other SEC crews. Can yall imagine when we go on the road to Oklahoma next season?! Good lawd, I might be begging for Beth Mowins two minutes into that broadcast rofl.

Thanks for the correction. For some reason, I thought she was a soph. Still, it looked to me like she felt a ton of weight lift from her shoulders.

Yes, I was holding my breath in the seventh, too. But not my wife. She was fussin' so loud about those walks that our dog ran and hid.

My dog also often runs and hides when softball is happening regardless of whether things are going well or not, either way it’s loud and she doesn’t like loud, poor girl lol.

Tori is one of the better ones in my opinion. I've heard and seen multiple things that the OU broadcast eas pretty one sided Friday night with their crew. I couldn't watch it but I listened to their radio show this morning and even the announcer himself said he was told beforehand to tone it down some now that they're in the SEC it's different and can't be as one sided on TV calls.
