So given Auburn's metrics, here's ours: % of games against Q1 = 42% Record against Q1 = 9-4 Losses against #5, 12, 21 and 30 NET Not bad if you remove Auburn, you could make a better case comparing ours against Houston or Duke, but Auburn's OOC was insane.
Houston being a better seed than us is ludicrous. We should be over Houston right now regardless of conference tourney. Just not Auburn. Houston is getting love for winning a garbage Big 12.
If only they could have settled it on the court. Because the rest of the things you mentioned matter, but the one thing that would settle the debate would be a head to head matchup.
The Big 12 is not garbage. Not to the SEC level this year but nobody is. They and the Big 10 are the second and third best conferences this year. The ACC is garbage, though. Well below the fourth best Big East conference.
I agree completely. Have no problem with Auburn as 1-overall. Their resume merits it. The loss to Bama was a blip, frankly. And our win was just completely impressive. They deserve a 1. And I am even cool with Duke as a 2, given their record-setting metrics. I frankly think Houston and Florida are a push.
One thing I find interesting is the relative success of elite teams against elite competition. We are technically fourth in Quad 1A wins (5-3), but just compare our success in games against top-10 NET teams (just to use the most prominent high-level ratings--you can sub in KP, Torvik, BPI, whatever). Florida: 3-1 (2-1 in true road games) Auburn: 4-3 (1-1 in true road games, 2-0 neutral) Alabama: 2-3 (1-1 in true road games, 1-0 neutral) Tennessee: 2-2 (0-2 in true road games) Houston: 2-3 (0-1 in true road games, 0-2 neutral) Duke: 1-0 (0 road games). IMO, beating elite opponents on the road or on a neutral court is a pretty good indicator of that team's upside. Florida and Auburn have categorically been then most impressive on that score. Again, I am fine with Duke getting a mulligan because they have absolutely thrashed bad competition, but penalizing us at the same time for thrashing bad non-conference competition seems a little odd given the qualify of our conference wins.
You're probably right. I'm always surprised how little the committee seems to value the conference tourneys on a regular basis. But man, if UF wins the tourney going through a combo of Mizzou, Bama, and Auburn/UT then how can Houston still be in front of them?
IMO us losing to Missouri at home and UGA on the road are worse losses than Auburn losing to us and Bama at home. We don't have any "bad" losses per se, but Auburn really doesn't have any. Perhaps the closest is the quality of beating we put on them.
I think with that Auburn loss cost them #1 seed in the south, which probably goes to Duke now. Florida gets #1 seed probably in west, Midwest maybe win the sec tourney and get the east
Ya maybe Duke gets the east and Auburn the south unless au bows out early in the sec tourney and Florida wins the sec tourney with their head to head win we get the south
That’s why I always have a bias against duke. Back under Billy we visited duke but they REFUSED to return the favor and would not play us in Gainesville….too scared. We got even in the tournament though.
I get it. Head to head is not an absolute. Let me preface this by saying that I generally don't approve of football analogies on the 'Net, but here goes. In Nov '96 the Nolie football team beat the Gators by 3pts in Tallahassee. Anyone reasonably familiar w both teams could recognize that things went FSU's way. Given a more level playing field, the Gators would beat that Nolie team's ass (and they did ). Now, if you want to make a case that Mizzou is better than UF, be my guest. I am more than happy, though, to make a case that at this point in time, FL should be higher than Auburn. Unlike the football ex above, these Gators won on the road and were dominating most of the game. FL has easily the best two wins in the ncaa. Who has a better boasting point? Seriously . . who can say they won at Auburn and at Bama and btw beat the then #1 ranked team by 30.
Good point about the head-to head. It's important, but it's not the end-all be-all because there's luck and circumstances involved. That's what makes sports so exciting- like Michigan beating tOSU this past fall. BUT- basketball is about the whole body of work. And the fact is that we should never have lost to Mizzou (we came out sleepy) nor UGA (we didn't take them seriously.) Auburn doesn't have as bad of a loss as we do to UGA. For whatever reason- they took every team seriously until they clinched the SEC. But it doesn't matter. Unlike CFB until 2024, every decent team gets a chance to prove itself on a neutral court. Hopefully we come out with our hair on fire for the next 9 games and if we do- I really like our chances.
Nobody they are great wins. I wish we would have taken care of business at Georgia. We would have a real case.
