This will be a disaster. Housing market imploding. Consumer sentiment plummets. Consumer spending falls. Wait till you see tax receipts in a recession that will go against $50B in unplanned unemployment expenses.

    Another flashing red sign

Top 10% of earners are holding up 50% of consumer spending

Perhaps what we are seeing is that top 10% pulling back. We fall into that group and have pulled back on retail, delayed some home improvements, holding off on replacing a car. Travel plans not impacted.....yet.

Consumer spending makes up 70% of GDP

The Wealthiest 10% of US Households Now Represent Nearly 50% of Consumer Spending - RetailWire

The wealthiest 10% of American households now account for nearly half of all consumer spending, the highest number on record since at least 1989, as FOX Business reported.
Citing data from a Moody’s Analytics report authored by Mark Zandi, the news outlet outlined that the richest 10% of U.S. households — defined as making about $250,000 or greater — represented 49.7% of all consumer spending. That’s the highest figure on record since data collection surrounding this metric was first measured by Moody’s, according to Marketplace, which also pointed out that consumer spending is responsible for driving approximately 70% of United States GDP.

I’ve more than done my part to hold up the GDP to start the year. I’m reminded of that when I pay off my CC bill each month.

I keep reminding myself of the trip I'm going to take with that new sign up bonuses. If I don't make the minimum spend, no bonus.lol. at least then you can see an upside to the spend. Just booked Houston to Sydney and Auckland to DFW for next Nov.. 15 hours in the tube..using up them bonuses to sit up front and do it right...more bucket list items to be checked. Assuming American are welcome by then.

We've put the breaks on, too, and I've always been a champion consumer (patriotic duty). Prices go up, uncertainty increases in the market in general, it's only natural to reduce expenditure.

I'm actually doing a similar trip in 2026. Which airline are you flying and will you be in Business? Based on your itinerary I'm assuming American.

BARTIROMO: CEOs wanna see predictability. They say, “Look, I have to speak with shareholders". So, can you give us a sense of whether or not we’re going to get clarity for the business community?

TRUMP: Well, I think so. But you know, the tariffs could go up as time goes by, and they may go up. And you know, I don’t know if it’s predictability. I think–

You think we'll still have electricity and internet connections by then? Or should we set up a system of smoke signals just in case?

Biden and his policies are still the law of the land until Trump gets his economic policy bill passed... So, we're still on Biden's economy and it's STILL CRASHING.

Except it wasn't crashing ... GDPNow estimated 3-4% GDP growth near the end of January. This is what threats of tariffs, deporting cheap labor, inflation driving policies, and Elon and Trump telling people to prepare for "hardship", "pain", and "tighten your belts" will do to consumer spending. It looks the spigot shut off when people started to think Trump and Musk were serious about doing dumb shit.
