Ukraine War Map Shows Russian Retreat on Three Fronts

Ukrainian troops are reportedly making gains along three parts of the front as Russian forces face a manpower shortage and poor command.

One pro-Moscow military blogger has lamented how Ukrainian forces are exerting growing pressure on Russian troops in the Donetsk region, as a map shows the latest state of play.

It comes amid recent advances by Ukrainian forces near Toretsk and Pokrovsk and concerns about continued United States aid for Kyiv's war effort.

 

And I'm sure, even though we have nice big ocean, I'm sure we'd feel it some day if this were to ever happen.

 

So you now acknowledge that conquest of Ukraine the ultimate goal, and that these negotiations are only a means to buy time and reconstitute? Well, that’s progress at least.

 

Nah, nah, nah, man. Ukraine is going to, like, collapse any day now. U.S. support was the only thing standing between them and complete defeat. Ukraine has absolutely zero agency of its own. A quasi-surrender in negotiations now to be followed by a full surrender in the years ahead is the best way to preserve the Ukrainian national identity for a bit longer.

Think Palestine/Israel. You can put whatever judgement you want on it, but the last 3 years has sealed a kind of hatred that will take generations to go away, if it ever goes away. Wouldn't surprise me if you saw Ukrainian terrorist acts against Russians 50 years from now. This isn't going to just go away. People have lost loved ones, multiple in many cases. Logic isn't going to enter the equation outside of operations.

 

It is about time we see a signal of pressure to the guilty side of this conflict.

 

Well, that’s pessimistic but not an altogether unreasonable interpretation given what we have seen over the last two weeks. Since I have no alternative course of action, I will hope that Russia is finally starting irritate the President with its intransigence.

 

I like this in principle, but from a real-world impact, os there really a demand for Russian products here that would dent the Russian economy with tariffs on their goods here?

That was my first thought. “Tariffs” is not the right term here, and “sanctions” is not wholly accurate either. As you say, it’s difficult to tariff a country with which you don’t trade. And in context sanctioning is not all we can do to undermine Russia’s economy. For example, measures to lower global hydrocarbon prices is neither a tariff nor a sanction but scares the living dog poop out of Russia. We should just use the term “economic measures” in my opinion.

 

That is true enough. And all I can say in this case is, it’s better than no words.

 

I thought was war was supposed be over by Noon on Jan 21st? WTH is going on here?

 

Because sanctions have worked so well to date. Trump doesn’t have the cards.
