FROM MLB's This Day in Baseball History+
1912 The Yankees announce they will begin wearing pinstripes on their uniforms this year, abandoning the new look at the end of the season. After Jacob Ruppert buys the team, the vertical lines will appear permanently, making their return in a 5-1 loss to Washington during the team's home opener in 1915.

1948 Pirates legendary third baseman Pie Traynor and left-hander Herb Pennock to the Hall of Fame. The Pittsburgh infielder spent his 17-year career in the Steel City, compiling a .320 lifetime batting average, and the 'Knight of Kennett Square' posted a .590 win-loss percentage during his 22 seasons in the majors, including a 162-90 stint for the Yankees from 1923-1933.

1984 San Francisco trades pitcher Fred Breining and outfielder Max Venable to the Expos for first baseman Al Oliver. The Giants will trade the veteran infielder and Renie Martin to the Phillies for Kelly Downs and George Riley in August.

1985 The Yankees send second baseman Toby Harrah to Texas for outfielder Billy Sample and a player to be named later (Eric Dersin). The 36-year-old veteran infielder, an original Ranger, will replace Bobby Valentine as the club's manager, finishing the 1992 season with a 32-44 record.

1988 The Orioles trade third baseman Ray Knight to Detroit for pitcher Mark Thurmond. The 1986 World Series MVP, after he hits only .217, will retire at the end of the season, playing primarily as the Tigers' first baseman and DH.

1989 John Olerud, the Blue Jay's pick in the third round of the upcoming June Amateur Draft, undergoes brain surgery to remove an aneurysm. The Washington State University left-handed first baseman had collapsed on January 11 after a workout.

1998 From Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, WGN TV airs the funeral of beloved broadcaster Harry Caray, who spent 53 years behind the mike doing play-by-play for the A's, Cardinals, White Sox, and Cubs. The eulogies reflected the 83-year-old zest for life, with stories bringing joy and laughter from the crowd that included Billy Williams, Mark Grace, Ryne Sandberg, Rick Sutcliffe, Minnie Minoso, and former Bears coach Mike Ditka.

2003 The new Veterans Hall of Fame selection committee, consisting mostly of Hall of Famers, selects none of the 41 players, executives, and umpires under consideration. Gil Hodges is 11 votes shy of 75 percent needed for induction, receiving 50 votes of 81 votes cast (61.7%).

2006 In spring training intra-squad action, Koby Clemens goes deep off a 43-year-old non-roster pitcher given special permission to train with the Astros. In his next at-bat, the 19-year-old minor leaguer gets brushed back with an inside fastball by the 300-game winner, his dad, Roger.

2006 Effa Manley is among the 17 significant historical figures from the Negro Leagues elected by a select committee for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The former Newark Eagles executive, called the Boss, will become the first woman enshrined in Cooperstown.

2008 The White Sox wear Northern Illinois University baseball caps in their spring training opening game, honoring the victims of a campus shooting rampage earlier this month. After the contest, the players autograph their hats, which will be auctioned off at NIU to benefit a scholarship fund in memory of the five students killed in the attack.

1953 The Braves owner Lou Perini, citing territorial privilege of the minor league Milwaukee Brewers, invokes territorial privilege, blocking a potential move by Bill Veeck to move his St. Louis Browns to the Cream City. In 15 days, the National League will approve the move of his club from Boston to Milwaukee, the first relocation of a major league franchise since 1903, when the Baltimore Orioles eventually became the Yankees.

1959 Candlestick Park is the winning entry in the Giants' Name-the-Park contest, selected by the sports editors of San Francisco's four daily newspapers from more than 20,000 entries, including Argonaut Arena and Zephyr Cove. Initially called Bay View Stadium, the ballpark's new name reflects the shape of the rocks in the area known as Candlestick Point.

1967 The American League permits the White Sox to use a partially designated hitter in spring training. With the home club's permission, each team will use a designated pinch-hitter twice in the same game.

1969 The Washington Post reports the Global League still needs to reach an agreement with a television network. The lack of a TV deal has derailed the reality of the proposed third major league.

    upload_2025-3-3_10-29-41.png
1984 Peter Ueberroth is elected baseball's sixth commissioner, replacing Bowie Kuhn as the major league's top executive. The former L.A. Olympic president will take office on October 1 and will receive compensation of $450,000, an amount that is nearly double his predecessor's salary.

1987 Danny Kaye, who helped lead an investment group that bought the Mariners in 1976, dies of heart failure. The 74-year-old entertainer was a lifelong fan of the Dodgers, recording a hit tune entitled The D-O-D-G-E-R-S Song, which detailed a fictitious encounter with the rivals Giants during the actual 1962 pennant race.

1988 Upset by a practical joke played by teammate Jesse Orosco, Dodger slugger Kirk Gibson walks out of camp for a day. The southpaw reliever had put eyeblack on Gibson's cap.

1997 In a controversial deal, the Yankees sign a ten-year contract with Adidas. The licensing agreement with the popular sportswear company puts team owner George Steinbrenner at odds with the baseball establishment.

2006 Jae-Weong Seo and Chan Ho Park combine to blank Taiwan in the inaugural World Baseball Classic opening game, 2-0. The first game of the 16-nation tournament, featuring the duel between the two South Korean hurlers, is played before a disappointing crowd of only 5,193 fans at Tokyo Dome.

2008 Noah Lowry throws 24 pitches before a batter takes a swing in the Giants' 6-4 Cactus League exhibition loss to Texas. The 28-year-old right-hander, who issues nine bases-on-balls to the first 12 Rangers he faces, goes through the entire once without recording an official at-bat, thanks to a combination of walks and sacrifice flies.
2012 The Padres sign Cameron Maybin to a five-year contract extension. The new undisclosed deal for the 24-year-old outfielder is reportedly worth $25 million for five years, with another $7 million possible during an option year in 2017.
2015 Major League Baseball introduces its new pace of play initiatives, designed to make the games shorter in duration, during five exhibition contests played in Arizona and Florida. The new rules planned to be slowly introduced before the implementation of penalties include having batters keep one foot in the batter's box after taking a pitch and using a clock to make innings start more punctually.
2016 Experts announce they have verified the legitimacy of seven identical Ty Cobb cards from the printing period of 1909 to 1911, bringing the total number known to exist to 22. The treasure, which features a picture of the 'Georgia Peach' on the front, with the words 'Ty Cobb – King of the Smoking Tobacco World' on the back, was found in a paper bag mixed in with trash by relatives, who were cleaning the dilapidated house that belonged to their great-grandfather.

1912 With the shanties torn down and the garbage pits filled in the Pigtown section in Brooklyn, Charles Ebbets breaks ground for his team's new Bedford Avenue ballpark. The Dodgers' Flatbush facility, which will serve as the team's beloved home for 44 years, will be named for its owner after a reporter at the ceremony suggested the idea to Charley.
    upload_2025-3-3_19-26-13.jpeg
1913 The Yankees become the first team to train outside of the United States when they start spring training in Bermuda, playing nine games against the International League’s New Jersey Skeeters. The minor league team had trained on the island nation in 1912, playing on a converted cricket field in Hamilton, known Bernard Park today.

1919 Giants' manager John McGraw sells Slim Sallee to the Reds, but the team will purchase the southpaw back next year. During his five seasons with New York, 'Scatter' compiles a 42-23 (.646) record along with an ERA of 2.26.
    upload_2025-3-3_19-27-43.jpeg upload_2025-3-3_19-28-5.jpeg

1921 After spending the first 12 years of his career with the Red Sox, the team trades veteran outfielder Harry Hooper to the White Sox for Nemo Leibold and Shano Collins. 'Hoop' will finish his playing days in Chicago, hitting .302 during his five seasons in the Windy City, thirty points higher than his average in Boston.
    [IMG][IMG]

1948 Cardinals outfielder Stan Musial ends his holdout, signing for $31,000, the same salary he made last season after new owners Robert Hannegan and Fred Saigh assure him that his salary will increase based on his performance. 'Stan the Man' gets a pay raise of $5,000 when he is hitting .403 at the All-Star break, en route to being named the National League's MVP.
    upload_2025-3-3_19-32-42.jpeg [IMG]

1976 The Giants, due to the intervention of San Francisco mayor George Moscone, will stay in the City by the Bay. In a last-minute deal, the Stoneham family sells the team to Bob Lurie and Bud Herseth for $8 million instead of the Labatt's Brewery, which had planned to move the Giants to Canada.

1984 The Special Veterans Committee selects two outstanding defensive players, shortstop Pee Wee Reese and catcher Rick Ferrell, to be members of Baseball's Hall of Fame. Cooperstown's newest infielder batted .269 during his 16-year career, all with the Dodgers, and the former Browns, Senators, and Red Sox's backstop hit .281 in his 18-year major league tenure.

2004 Commissioner Bud Selig announces major league baseball will celebrate "Jackie Robinson Day" in every ballpark on April 15, the anniversary of the debut of the first black player in the major leagues. Jackie's number (42) was retired for all time in a ceremony at Shea Stadium in April of 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of Robinson's achievement.

2006 "We are sorry that certain players will not be present for portions of spring training. These players have elected to participate in the World Baseball Classic. The World Baseball Classic is an event sanctioned by the commissioner of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association. The New York Yankees did not vote to support this event."- LEGENDS FIELD SIGN, apologizing for the absence of star players.
Before the scheduled exhibition game at Legends Field in Tampa, the Yankees, using a sign outside the park, apologize to the fans for Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon, and Bernie Williams not playing due to their participation in the World Baseball Classic. Bronx Bombers boss George Steinbrenner had abstained when the owners approved the World Cup type tournament at the urging of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

2008 Brad Hawpe and the Rockies agree to $17,425,000 for three years, replacing the $3,925,000, one-year contract signed in January. Joining right-hander Aaron Cook, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and closer Manny Corpas, the Colorado right fielder becomes the fourth young player of the National League champs to receive a long-term deal.

2012 A swarm of bees that moved down the right-field line and settled near the Giants' dugout behind first base causes the evacuation of two sections of fans, delaying the split-squad game against the Diamondbacks for 41 minutes. The Salt River Fields grounds crew uses a combination of lemonade and cotton candy obtained from the concession stand to lure the buzzing insects away from fans and players.
