Mike has 5 kids. if you are suggesting he should’ve prioritized rivalry, and opted for a lesser paying job…. well, we aren’t gonna agree.
He should do what is best for he and his family. That’s his primary obligation.

I'm not saying at all what he *should have done.* I'm simply saying what he did do. Let's not pretend he couldn't have retired and still taken care of his family (and have more time to spend with his kids). This has absolutely nothing to do with that. He's earned well beyond what is necessary to take care of a family (even a family of 7).

ok- yes, we are wired differently. You are an all-out gators fan. My bother is exactly the same. I have great respect, even if I am a bit different.
I am a sports fan who loves the gators. I watch countless games, and with more than passing interest. I love the game. I love most games!

    (family of 7)

Is anyone disputing what he “did do”? Is anyone denying he went to Georgia?

You are arguing his motives/reasons. I’ve provided what those were at the time. I’m not terribly interested in the label. The simple truth is - Mike felt he was in an untenable spot at Florida, and accepted the opportunity he thought was best for himself, his career and his family. If that’s “ego”… so be it.

And yes- he likely could have retired. But quite frankly, bypassing opportunity to provide for your children/grandchildren future so not to upset fans within the “rivalry” … would seem to be caving to those egos. And rather fragile ones.

Sir. I just want to know why ypu stopped the traditional "typing as I listen thread"? That was one of my favorite traditions on this thread for 10 years. Sheesh. Cant believe I typed that but I did the math. Lol

Hmm... having a hard time here visualizing the poor, starving street urchins of the Mike White family, barely scraping by on the millions of dollars doled out by Gator Scrooges. It's right out of Dickens.

Just kidding. You're one of the good guys, but I couldn't resist this one.

The only thing you've said that I've taken issue with is the comment about self-preservation. I think that is an exaggeration the way you think that "ego" may be an exaggeration, I suppose. Truth is, all coaches at this level have ego as a motivator, it's part of their drive. You approach this subject as a friend; I approach it as a fan. I'm not here to question his personal decisions and what they mean to his family or even his own career. That is of zero interest to me. As long as he's the coach at Georgia, I wish him lots of L's, and I hope they keep him for a really long time. And nobody's calling for him to retire (except for maybe Georgia fans), the point on that was simply it's not about having enough money for his family; he's achieved that and then some...nothing wrong with that, either.

    Go GATORS!

I mean he did blow a 26 pt lead. I'm not gonna say much has changed because his team had a good final minute after that.

Friendship is thicker than sports rivalry.
Kuddos aka for sending the text.

...i still wanted him to go 0-30 against us :D

I have no animosity to him as a man. He is a great dude. I just have had my eyes opened after defending him as a coach for so long.

But people banging on your friendship really need to chill.

I was so glad that he left, but wished it would not have been to a rival. But him leaving was the best thing that could’ve happened to us. We are so much better off with Golden.

Despite the loss, we are still one of the elite teams in the SEC. If White were still here, we would likely have a great win that we weren’t supposed to, and a horrible loss that no one expected.

And we would be a team firmly on the bubble. Wash, rinse, repeat with Mike White’s teams. We are lucky to have Todd as our coach!

I know. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to abandon. Most of my sports watching now is that of my kids. I don’t miss a gators game, but frequently watching on my phone… at a soccer field, tennis tourney, basketball court, etc.

Have you ever had to experience driving to the store in last year's Lamborghini? People stop and stare and do one of those "pity" shakes of their heads. I would not want to put that one on ANYONE!!!

Mike White went to Georgia for the same reason Bill Curry went to Kentucky: The home fans were about to run him outta town on a rail and he went where he knew there would be a lot more length to his rope. I don't necessarily look at that as a bad thing for a man trying to lengthen his career in his chosen profession. Sometime you do what you have to do.

    lol! Thanks! Back at ya!

I wasn’t intending to “cry poor”, of course. I have no idea how many millions Mike has.
But he has 5 kids. Given the choice between leaving each kid a few million (or even a few million more) versus placating to the feelings of a fan base that ran me out…. well, I think I know what I’d chose.
But maybe that’s my ego talking! ;)

I presume anyone who was friends with him- probably hoped for his success…. even while wanting Bama to smash Kentucky each time.

I don't see this as the same; Curry won the SEC in his third and final season at Alabama and improved each year. I also thought Curry left due to a contract dispute, but it was a long time ago, so I could be mistaken. Gene Stallings was a brilliant replacement, he definitely got a raw deal (70-16-1 on the field). Regardless, I hope the trajectories are consistent with Stallings/Curry. Stallings won the title in year 3! Not sure if Curry had any winning seasons with Kentucky. ;)

I'll never not consider Mike White a nice guy based on all that I've heard, BUT he's the Georgia coach! Really not interested in defending him; rooting for him; or thinking about anything positive for him other than any good times he brought to our program, but that's just me. Maybe when he moves on from there, I'll be more interested in his 7 kids (who knows?), his financial planning, and talking about how nice he is.

Nah, he ran himself out. It's that whole salary/expectations vs. performance equation.

Maybe there was also a contract dispute, but I do recall that he was not well received by Bama fans since he was not part of the "Bama Family." Losing to Auburn 3 years in a row probably didn't help. He might have thought that brick thrown through his office window was the tip of the iceberg considering it came after his team's 3-way tie for the SEC title in 1989.
