I am sure that there are USAID programs that many or most people might question. Dollars that could be used better someplace else, or not used at all.
But the agency has been around for more than 60 years. It's been funded and approved by Congress and presidents ever since because as the wealthiest nation on earth, they felt that we should be helping others.
Now, All of a sudden, Trump (or I guess more accurately Elon Musk) has announced it's a terrible thing. A criminal organization that must be destroyed. Everyone who works there is a bad person.
And rather than taking a serious analysis of what the agency does, what should be kept and what should be cut, Musk decides to trash the whole thing. And apparently conservatives get right in line, pretending like they've known it all the time.

 

Where has any Democrat anywhere given blanket defense of USAID? On this thread there have been several posters claiming this strawman but the posts show that the issue is the blanket offense of illegally cutting all aid, not the support for waste or fraud.

Millions of dollars worth of American food rots at ports amid USAid shutdown

Millions of dollars’ worth of American food is rotting at ports and warehouses amid Donald Trump’s freeze on foreign aid, according to a US government.

Some $489 million in food being stored around the world is going to waste because of paralysis at the US’ international development agency (USAid), as the US president attempts to dismantle the body.

A report on Monday from Paul Martin, the USAid inspector general, found that close to half a billion dollars’ worth of food was rotting because of confusion surrounding Mr Trump’s freeze last month.

Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, subsequently issued a waiver for emergency food and life-saving aid, but the USAid report claims shipments are in “limbo” because staff were given “conflicting instructions”.

 

USAID is not really an aid organization, although it has helped farmers in Afghanistan grow poppies to manufacture heroin. We do need to retain some USAID capability to project US soft power. To help gain access to other country's raw materials/oil for example. But stuff like this is crazy:

 

I love the idea that USAID was behind Trump's impeachment. Because, you know, after the Democrats in Congress impeached Trump over his alleged effort to get election help from Ukraine .... it never occurred to them that maybe his attempting to overturn the election and our democracy was an impeachable offense. Never crossed their minds. But then in stepped the USAID and whispered in their ears ....

 

Trump fixed the problem of millions of dollars of rotting food because of musk. He fired the guy who reported it.

Edit: Maybe it's just me but I find it rather bizarre the someone would find humor in the fact the faith-based organizations like Catholic Charities are provided assistance to the poor in Third Wold countries through USAID grants.
