Probably because he was a failure as a HC at Ball State.

KSC was not good at her head coaching stop and look at her now. Led Penn State to a natty. SS risks the chance of losing top players if he does not go with Dave. The new coach might have to build legit from the ground up and it may not work out.

I went to the volleyball alumni dinner tonight. There were a lot of alumni there.
There were some that I knew, some I recognized their face, and some I had no idea.
There were few if any tears. Everyone seem to celebrate Mary’s retirement.
Current team was not invited, because alcohol was served.
    Some tidbits.
Betsy Smith, now Freberg of the class of 2012 is the head volleyball coach at UAB.
Chandra Stebbins class of 1994 is now the athletic director at Santa Fe community college. She came and sat down and talked to me for about 15 minutes. I don’t know if I looked lonely or what. She invited me to come to their games, and I probably will.
it was a great night celebrating the alumni.
CMW SPOKE BRIEFLY, BUT SHE LET IT BE ALL ABOUT THE ALUMNI.
    CLASSY AS USUAL.

Also, Mary paid tribute to Marilyn McReavy, the only other volleyball coach for Florida.
While not wildly successful at Florida, she was a significant figure in the sport.
For you old enough to remember before the NCAA had women's sports, there was the AIAW. She won national championships at Sul Ross and Utah State.

On Volleyball Talk, names have been thrown around to replace Wise: SMU's Samantha "Sam" Erger "Sam does not have all the money she says she has. At least thats what the rumor mill is churning. A lot of promises that have not been "met" per se. we will see though i guess"; Kelly Murphy, who was in Gainesville yesterday (probably for the banquet):"i heard she, like really really, wanted john cooks job but when he picked DBK she dipped"; Keegan Cook (8 years HC of Washington (198–56), 2 years at Minnesota; Ryan Theis (Marquette). His wife is a Gator icon (Jenny Manz); Pittsburgh's Dan Fischer or Baylor's Ryan McGuyre. Someone posted: Fisher and Babcock to Florida and they run the most hellacious 6-2 in the history of collegiate volleyball ...And RED fans are scared, real scared
    I don't know what this means;
It seems that the team is pushing for Dave Boos.

I was living in Mississippi during then rooting on the Delta State Women's Basketball.
They won 3 years in a row. And they beat Immaculata twice and then LSU,

    AIAW Champions (1972-1982)
Long before the Tennessee women's basketball team became the first to win three consecutive NCAA titles, the Immaculata women accomplished the same feat in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.

The AIAW was formed in 1972 and ran through 1982, when the first NCAA Tournament was held for women's basketball.

Although the last AIAW champion was decided 18 years ago, the league played an important part of women's college basketball history.

Immaculata, the first women's college basketball team to play a nationally-televised game and the first women's team to travel overseas, won three consecutive national championships from 1972 to '74. Delta State then swept the next three titles before Ann Meyers' UCLA Bruins and Nancy Lieberman-Cline's Old Dominion Lady Monarchs eventually won championships.

    1973 Immaculata Queens 59-52
    1974 Immaculata Miss. College 68-53

    1976 Delta State Immaculata 69-64

    Mary Wise By the Numbers:
It is mind-blowing what Mary Wise has accomplished here at Florida in building an elite program. The Gators were so dominant that it took 15 years for the other SEC programs to catch up and compete for SEC titles. Mary Wise has been instrumental in lifting the SEC into a powerhouse volleyball conference as schools started investing more and hiring top coaches. Wise's Impact: Unfortunately I do not have any studies or research on the impact Wise has made in Florida re: the growth of volleyball. But I witnessed first hand the growth and participation, and a few nieces who got involved playing after going to Florida volleyball matches. I remember how the popularity of Lacrosse grew massively after Florida added it. Successful Gator sports programs do have a big impact on the sport's popularity across the state.
Coach Wise's success at Florida has fueled volleyball's popularity in the state of Florida with a rise in participation at the club level coinciding around the start of her coaching tenure. As Wise was leading Florida to consecutive Final Fours, growth in club participation and enthusiasm spread across the state. As the level of talent and competition improved, the state emerged as a hotbed for college recruitment. High schools locally, starting with Gainesville High School's state championship runs in the early 90's, and Santa Fe, Eastside, Oak Hall and Buccholz(sic) High Schools competing for state championships annually. Without Wise's ultra-successful career with the Gators, Gainesville and north central Florida would surely not have the reputation for being the hotbed for volleyball.
It will be quite a task to find a coach who will be able to come close to achieving these kinds of numbers:

    1,067 career victories
-the most among female Division I head coaches since the NCAA’s first volleyball season in 1981
-only the 4th head coach overall to record 1,000 victories all at the Division I level
    992 wins since 1991
-second only to Penn St (999) during this period
900 second female coach in Division I history to reach 900 wins at a single school
145 consecutive SEC regular season wins
-first program in NCAA history to win 130 consecutive regular season conference matches
109 consecutive home SEC winning streak
105 consecutive sets won in 2003
-including a sweep thru the SEC (3-0 wins) without dropping a set
-first program in NCAA history to win 100 consecutive sets
82-33 (.717) all-time record at Florida in the NCAA Tournament
-6th highest winning percentage in Division I history
    34 straight NCAA tournament bids
-third longest active streak in the nation behind Penn State (44) and Nebraska (43)
-making the field every year under Mary Wise
    31 AVCA Top 15 year-end ranking
    -second to Nebraska's 33
    29 NCAA Regional Semifinals
    25 SEC titles
-10th-most in conference history in any sport, regardless of gender
-3rd-most by any SEC team, regardless of sport or gender, since 1979
-14 more than the next closest-Kentucky with 11
    17 NCAA Regional Finals
15 SEC Coach of the Year
    8 NCAA Semifinals
3 AVCA National Coach of the Year
    2 NCAA Runners-up
1 of only two female coaches in NCAA history to coach in more than one Final Four

I do remember your post and thinking how logical it sounded. Wise's decision to step down now doesn't make any sense to me. She's so close to winning her 1,000 game with Florida (I know she has already won over 1,000 in her career), the talent level she has assembled that would give her the best shot in a long time for winning her 1st NCAA title, coaching the best player in the country, the number "35" ("34" sounds so weird to step down from), an expected dip in the level of play by the usual top guns and opening the door for a new champion to emerge...it is like the stars are aligning for Wise and the Gators IMHO. It makes me wonder if this decision was as shocking to us as with the AD? Or were they prepared for it and had already started a search to replace her? This decision will either have a pernicious outcome and we lose all that talent, or they will bring someone in who energizes the program and will finally get us over the proverbial hump. There is no gray area here. How does one replace the legend Mary Wise?

Scott is our AD. It is his job to find a replacement. He has a select group assisting him. He wants to do a thorough job and hit a home run just like he did with Golden. Boos is being considered. Scott wants this done ASAP.
We are fortunate. This team has the potential to win it all with the right coach. We have the financial ability and support to make that happen. Yes, guys, we are the Gators after all!

And the no brainer hire for the Huskers, imo.
I have heard low noise that Pitts Dan Fisher has been contacted….would love that hire-personally.

If you were SS, what importance would you place on hiring a woman vs hiring a man, if any? And how much influence would the players' wishes play in your decision?

That is a good question. Imo, women don’t listen to women very well. Why? Good question. Authoritatively there’s a difference. Why? Good question. I’ve asked this of my daughters. Women responding to this may disagree, but in my experience, girls react more favorably to men.

IMO those two factors can't drive the decision....but all things being equal I think you err on the side of both those items. But rarely do you face "all things equal" amongst multiple candidates. I think ultimately you just hire the best candidate available

In case anyone missed a previous post, Marquette's Ryan Theis is married to former Gator Great Jenny Manz. He is young and a proven winner. He'd take the job if offered IMHO. The interest for the Gator HC position should be sky high. The fan base has a high college volleyball IQ, a top 10 attendance average, the passion and the hunger to win natties; the athletic department has the resources, facilities and money; Wise has built an elite program; the nation's third most populous state is a hotbed for talent who see the Gators as the gold standard in the Southeast to play for.
