Panama pledges to end key canal deal with China, work with US after Rubio visit Sounds like Rubio made some progress in Panama. It is pretty new news so not a lot out there about it yet.
I must have missed that part. I thought he was babbling about such things as possibly taking it by force.
Glad to hear it. The text of the Treaty is pretty clear about whose responsibility it is to guarantee the neutrality of the Canal and what might happen if they don’t.
I am not pleased with most of trumps policies when it comes to the American continents but anything that diminishes china’s influence is welcome news. The problem is that trump is acting like he’s a hammer right now and every geopolitical issue is a nail. That’s only going to get you so far imo.
Amazing all of these foreign policy wins less than two weeks into Trump’s administration. What a contrast to the never ending bad outcomes of the prior administration. Amazing what a little negotiation skill can do.
It’s good to pause Chinese advancement in the Canal, but it doesn’t sound like to changes the status quo in any practical way. More like they want U.S. investment $$$$ to match any foregone Chinese $$$$, and this is what Rubio promised. Hence, future contract renewals “under review”.
“Pause.” lol The US is enforcing a treaty. It’s not like Panama is going to be able to resume things with China if China bids more money. That’s not how treaties work.
His plan was fine for Panama. Maybe not so for Canada and Mexico, for example. We’ll see how things go.
Rubio tells Panama to end China's influence of canal or face US action Mulino, after the talks with the top U.S. diplomat in Panama City, signaled he would review agreements involving China and Chinese businesses, and announced further cooperation with the U.S. on migration, but reiterated that his country's sovereignty over the world's second busiest waterway is not up for discussion.
Do you think China is abandoning their ports there or something? The Panamanian contention is that they have operated the canal neutrally and their promise is to “look into” their China contracts. This is a classic Trump rope-a-dope. I think it’s a good thing to put a wedge between China and Panama (ending their so-called Silk Road deal, busting that deal seems to be the big score here), but I can’t see that this changes any status quo as far as how cargo moves nor does it “evict” China from the ports they presently operate.

Trump has a great team. As Robert Barnes said: "The difference between this Trump administration and the Biden administration, when looking at everyone, is like comparing the Olympics to the Circus."
