Bob Menendez, once a powerful US senator from New Jersey, cried as he begged a Manhattan judge for leniency Wednesday — and was sentenced to 11 years in prison for selling out his lofty post for gold bars, cash, a Mercedes-Benz convertible and other bribes.

The waterworks came before Manhattan federal Judge Sidney Stein handed the sentence to the three-term Democrat — who resigned in disgrace in August after a jury found him guilty of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in payola in exchange for protecting and enriching businessmen and foreign governments.

“Somewhere along the way, you became, I’m sorry to say, a corrupt politician,” Stein told the disgraced pol.

    Lawfare.

Also, remember when almost the entire Democrat political leadership went to hang out at the courthouse, outside his trial, to give press conferences where they lied on his behalf?

    Ne neither.

see how people are suppsoed to treat criminals, regardless of their party affilaition or cult leadership poition.

amazing how fast his case got to court and neither J6 or the documents case didn't

justice delayed turned into justice denied and now we have a traitor to his own people and country in the WH. How proud MAGA must be putting in someone who evaded prosecution and then pardoned his co-conspirators

He was surprisingly arrogant and brazen. When he was caught and - deny deny deny - I assumed - ‘great, another big-time politician will get away with it.’ Good to see justice won out this time. 11 years was more than I expected.

Wouldn't surprise me if Trump commuted his sentence although probably not immediately. Trump really doesn't consider corruption to be a crime and there is precedent. During his first term Trump commuted the sentence of Rod Blagojevich the former governor of Illinois and another Democrat convicted of corruption who was also sentenced to a long term. I guess the difference in that Blago had already served several years when Trump commuted his sentence while Menendez has yet to serve a day.

Wait, you mean that you don't automatically assume it was because he had a conflict with other politicians but rather due to his own criminality?

For once I'm going to agree with you.

His "own people", of course being those who enforce the law.

Your "own people", of course, elected a felon.

Too bad he wasn't smooth enough to qualify for membership with the Biden crime family.
He's the only liberal criminal who didn't get his pardon.

Former Sen. Bob Menendez sentenced to 11 years in prison, no fine in federal bribery case

Former Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Wednesday in a federal bribery case in which he was accused of trading political influence for cash, gold bars and other goods with two Egyptian and New Jersey businessmen.

A jury in July found Menendez, along with Edgewater developer Fred Daibes and Egyptian American businessman Wael Hana, guilty on all charges related to the bribery scheme. Daibes was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined $1.75 million. Hana was sentenced to a little more than eight years in prison and fined $1.3 million. Menendez was not fined for his part in the corruption.

Menendez, 71, represented New Jersey for more than 18 years in the U.S. Senate. He resigned in August after the convictions.

He got away with this for a long time, I guess Joe didn't like him
