Still, what are we gonna do… blockade condoms from the area completely? Based on the actual links above only a tiny fraction of this health aid is condoms or contraceptives of any kind. That is always a risk with humanitarian aid, bad actors on the ground repurposing or hijacking for themselves. That is even true of food aid. Maybe if it’s a legit concern we are indirectly supplying materials for these crude “bombs” you withhold that part of the aid shipment, that makes some sense. But I doubt any terrorist is constrained by whether the U.S. sends aid or not.

I have to say I had no idea there is an annual govt report on “global condom shipments”, nevertheless there it is in post 13.

The lie is that this $50,000,000 in condoms was earmarked for Gaza, where it’s apparently the TOTAL figure with almost none to the Middle East. 89% goes to Africa. I’m guessing all this sending condoms to Africa stared due to AIDS epidemic, but that is an area of the world with basically nothing and insane child mortality so doesn’t seem like a bad idea. It’s not necessarily even “saving” money in the long run to cut aid. I wouldn’t suggest a positive ROI on humanitarian aid (nor should that be the only calculus), but stability has value.

My wife works in non-profit, basically administration of USIAD projects, frequently with a whole lot o medical deliverables. US aid helps tons of people. Literally millions. That's absurd to misspeak that aid we buy just sits around.

Oh. Trotting out the ole right-wing "We need to stop helping these people so we can help our own people that we never want to help, so we can cut taxes for the rich."

Haven't looked into this, but given the poverty, crowding, scarcity of resources, and the fertility rates in Gaza, paying for condoms might be less expensive than what we will ultimately spend on humanitarian aid for Gaza and military aid to Israel.

Some $60.8 million in funding was allocated by USAid for condoms and female contraceptives in 2023, but not a cent of that seems to have gone to Gaza. In fact, no condoms were sent to any part of the Middle East and just one small shipment — $45,680 in oral and injectable contraceptives — was sent to the region, all of it distributed to the government of Jordan.​
