President Trump is preparing to place tariffs beyond Chinese assembled electronics to computer chips made in Taiwan, warning the tariffs could reach as high as 100%.

“In particular, in the very near future, we’re going to be placing tariffs on foreign production of computer chips, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals to return production of these essential goods to the United States,” Trump said in a speech to Republicans on Monday.

“They left us and went to Taiwan,” he then said in an apparent reference to how many of the leading US tech companies have been sourcing their processors from Taiwan’s TSMC, a top semiconductor manufacturer. TSMC has established a factory in Arizona, but much of its chip production remains in Taiwan, where it’s been serving clients including Apple, Nvidia, Qualcomm and AMD, among others.

“We want them to come back,” Trump said before slamming the US’s CHIPS and Science Act, which his predecessor President Biden signed to invest over $52 billion in domestic chip manufacturing.

We want to build chips in the US so lets blow up the CHIPS Act. Makes total sense. This move will impact Apple, Tesla, HP and everyone else. Can someone tell me when we can expect prices to go down?

I am in the industry, guy has no clue. Might be laidoff due to this.

Note, everyone making high-end chips uses TSMC.

I'm no expert in this field, but we can never eliminate the possibility that he's just doing something in order to extort somebody.

Both the govt of Taiwan and TSMC have to make some big purchases of Trump Coin and Melania Coin to avoid this?

We truly have an idiot in the White House. Within the next couple of years TSMC will be producing advance chips at a facility located near Phoenix. Until then and maybe even afterwards we will have to rely on chips manufactured in Taiwan. Although the stable genius with the orange complexion doesn't understand the connection one of the reasons for the inflation of late 2021/2022 was attributable to supply chain problems including a shortage of chips from Taiwan. Imposing large tariffs on chips manufactured in Taiwan is virtually certain to reignite inflation.

So question. Is there anyone in the USA that even has the capability to try and come close to TSMC in the next couple years?

Because nobody is going to make that investment when these tarrifs could be gone in 4 years anyway. I sure as shit wouldn't spend billions on investing in something that could be made worthless on a whim.

He’s an effin moron. Taiwan won’t give up their semiconductor industry, particularly cutting edge technology (they’re working on 2nm and 1.6 nm tech) because that is almost the entirety of why the world cares about their independence from China. The new plant they’re building in Arizona won’t produce their latest gen chips for those that think we’ll have the capability on shore.

Finally, Trump is behind the times. The US currently produces 10% of semiconductors globally and due to CHIPS changing a decades long trend the US’s share is set to increase to 16% in 2032. Without CHIPS the industry believes it would fall to 8% of global production. So the work is already being done and all Trump will accomplish is to increase the price of almost every consumer electronic.

Nice, a tacit acknowledgement that Taiwan is China. Nice diplomatic gesture.

I'm taking a more covid-esque approach on this; if we just don't count inflation, it won't exist.

It’s only been 8 days! The flamethrower is just getting primed.

this rhetoric fits a one China policy and might be a signal to China to cool the engines in an attack. Who knows. Trump is a wild man.

No. It takes years and billions of dollars just for the Fabs. Not even talking about the money needed to keep investing in the technology.

Intel was the head of the game decades ago, but their technology lead diminished and has now been passed by TSCM and probably Samsung too.

Many companies primarily use TSMC, Apple, Nvidia, etc. Maybe this is his play to tell the techbros he is in charge.

clear tech out of Taiwan so China can have it without disrupting global economy. reality is tech will stay there, suffer, and make it easier for China to buy their nose under the tent

Ironically, that was the one thing he was right about, that if we’d stop testing, ‘Covid’ would go away.

A fraudulent diagnostic was the only thing that sustained the perception of a pandemic.

Can I ask you a question? I won't even ask what the source is for your belief that germs and viruses don't exist. I don't believe such an outside source exists, at least I've never heard of it. My question is, what do you get out of it? Is it something sexual or what?

Solid take and insight. The concentration of global risk is… both amazing and confounding.
