Maybe Sabin and Belichick hired him because of his daddy and to be nice or maybe they see something in him. If he's that good of a coach, there's no downside to hiring him while he's young and letting him work here a few years before getting a big job.
They've been a top 10 defense and defense isn't the problem. Their 5* QB not able to complete passes to WRs is.
I understand your position that he isn’t a highly experienced coach, but we had that in Corey Raymond and where did that get us. Sometimes young, knowledgeable, and hungry yields greater results. I also don’t know that three years as a position coach in the NFL and one as a position coach at a P4 program is woefully low for a guy who is hired to be a position coach. Especially with a guy who played the position for a decade. I’m also not worried about the Co-DC title because RR is still calling the D and has the authority to override anything he thinks is wrong. We have an experienced DC running that side of the ball. As for him being a DC at JSU, he was there for three weeks and never even ran a practice. I’m guessing he took the job to try to bypass the Co-DC route that many take. I’m actually more impressed with someone giving him a low level DC job than another position coach spot at UF. He essentially took a lateral from UW. While UW didn’t have a great year, their safeties played really well in 24’ under him. I agree with a lot of things you post, but on this one we may just have to agree to disagree. Go Gators!
Roberts is the man. He did what he was brought in for and fixed the defense. He's got a solid staff. Next year we'll take the defense to another level. We are back to an elite SEC defense. The offense will benefit.
It has to happen or we'll be outscored. Remains to be seen if our Defense can pick up where it left off.
Well, it's okay to pay. Why not if they can afford it and it produces more wins? Bargain shopping saves money but does not increase one's status. The value of a program that wins 10-12 every season is much higher than one that wins 8.
I sincerely doubt it's a money issue but more Bwilly boxed himself into a corner with his previous hiring patchwork.
Co-DC is just because if he is in the “War Room” doing pass defense coordination preparations, then he is technically a Co-DC. It also justifies the salary (whatever it is). Just about every major program has gone to these “Co” titles, but make no mistake about it. On Saturdays Roberts will be calling the defense. Co is just the new way to say Assistant.
Paid made a good point that it probably just gets us out of paying a buyout. We shouldnt need any type of dc title or any other type of leverage to pull a coach from jsu. Just offer any job.
