Both teams got their first real competition of the season last weekend Women hosted the first 2 rounds, Men on the road at Columbia Men- Won opening match vs Mid Tenn 4-0, but honestly didn't play particularly well. Jin was great at 2, Ganesan was pushed to 3 sets at 1, Janmagnus was ok at 4, Jefferson at 3 and Edengren at 5 were in tight 3rd sets and Paliska in a dogfight at 6. Not comforting when 4 of the 6 matches vs an outmanned opponent are that tight. Faced Columbia on Sunday. Got manhandled in doubles, this doesn't look to be a strength barring some big steps up. Ganesan beaten soundly....he's a good young player but not ready for #1 Jin was headed to a 3rd set Jefferson won a very close match, he's kind of the surprise thus far Nirundorn lost a very close match. He's a scrapper better suited to play 5 or 6 Edengren with a nice outing and win on 5. I like him there or at 6 Weintraub blasted 6-0 6-0....they could have put me out there and won as many points in that match. No idea why JanMagnus wasn't used, might have had a chance. Ultimately this is a VERY young team. Looks like the freshmen aren't ready to contribute so the sophs are going to have to carry them. And that isn't a talented enough team to beat good teams as it stands now Women Open vs a decent FIU team Emily finally returns at1, gets destroyed 0 and 2 Dudeney wins a 3 setter at 2....faced match points in 2nd set Neilson loses a 3 setter at 3 Daubnerova easy win at 4 Spee was headed to a 3rd set at 5 Oliveras won a 2nd set TB at 6 for the win Still no Gailis or Lopez, and Emily first appearance very ugly Sunday vs a mediocre LSU Lose the doubles point Dudeney crushed in 1st set but was leading in 3rd set Emily won a set, but lost the others 1-6....hopefully this is just rust Neilson beaten solidly at 3 Daubnerova bageled in set 1, battles in set 2 but loses Spee was about to lose in straight sets Oliveras with a nice win 1 and 1 This team is good with Gailis, Lopez, and productive Emily. As it stands now they aren't beating anyone good. I've seen no mention of either in any regard, still on the roster so remains to be seen Could be an ugly year if things don't pick up fast.
Also tough seeing #3 Ohio St being led by former Gator Aidan Kim (#11 nationally playing #1 for Buckeyes. 2 time captain of UF squad Nate Bonnetto is playing #1 for Georgia Tech....he would be fabulous in the middle of UF lineup. And former UF player Jonah Braswell is ranked #20 nationally for top ranked Texas.
