Remembering Andy Brandi (1952-2024) - Florida Gators

 

Elite tennis bloodline

 

I've been watching youtube videos of pro tennis matches from the 80's and 90's. One was the 1985 Wimbledon women semifinals of Evert vs Rinaldi. They talked about Kathy living in Gainesville because of Brandi, then they showed him in the stands. I also watched 1992 US Open Stafford vs Navratilova where Shaun won the 1st set, then took Martina to a third-set tiebreaker. Again, they talked about Brandi and Gator tennis, and showed him in the stands. And Evert vs Cioffi, and Navratilova vs Cioffi, same thing, Brandi sitting in the stands.

In 1992, I had just graduated from UF, and living in San Francisco. I drove down to Palo Alto for the team quarters, semis and finals. I was wearing full-on Gator gear and cheering my heart out (I nearly was kicked out when a UCLA player complained about my cheering). It was one of the greatest Gator moments in my life-second only to being at the Sugar Bowl watching the Gators beating FSU and winning our first football natty!

 

Great memories. I remember that Martina was mad that Shaun was laughing so much - think she was glad to be on the court with Martina. Stanford complained to the NCAA because we had Cioffi on a track scholarship. Was also at Stanford for the 1992 final vs Texas. It was six singles matches followed by doubles - which were also best 2 of 3 sets. Long long day but still remember Texas mishit of serve return in doubles to give us our first championship. Lastly, lot of heckling of Brandi by Stanford fans. GO GATORS!!
