We have a great resident poster here who always complains we never change the defense and it’s a pretty legitimate complaint. I feel like even throwing this defense in for 6-7 possessions a game could be a game changer in these tight games against lesser teams. A team like Alabama would likely eat it up, but you have to find ways to win these tough SEC games and this could be it. Loved the move by Todd.

Not many of the big dogs are going to turn it over like usce last night. The davis kid was shooting well, but he was a liability if he had to dribble and their PG was just bad down the stretch.

I was happy to see us try something different though. We were getting carved up in the half court.

Shout out to Todd. Seemed like Mizzou all over again, he made a coaching move and it paid off.
So now we can file away in our heads that UF can apply pressure and turn a game.

With respect to SCe, UF really needed this W to hold it's position, would have been an ugly loss considering
USCe was 0-5 in league play going in.

I have heard some crazy predictions about how many SEC teams could get into the dance. I'm beginning to believe it!

I'd like to see us sparingly add a half-court zone to our menu. Just to throw opponents' offense off for a couple of possessions. Maybe coming out of a timeout and the oppo has the ball, and has probably drawn up their own offensive play to work against man-to-man.

I would love to talk to coach about his disdain for the press. We want to speed up the tempo and not get stuck in a half court rock fight, so it doesn't make sense to me why he hates to press. I can only guess it is because he has such a short bench, which I don't like. OTOH, we are off to our best start of the season ever, so maybe we should just do what coach says. lol

i think I know the guy your reference! ;)

i don’t want to “always complain”… as we are in a great spot. But yes… I do think having some defensive versatility helps. And what wrinkle your throw out there… may change from one opponent to the next.

last night was perfect for the 1-2-2.

I think what might be important using the press going forward is if we have a speed and/or quickness advantage. Its one thing to talk about having a speed advantage driving the ball to the hoop against the other teams defense but its a whole different view to use that speed in your defense. Last night's example shows this perfectly. SC had little to no confidence bringing the ball up, therefore little speed. Martin, Richard, and Condon had better speed and quickness than their counter parts. They were able to jump the passes at or near the half court line. My point, our press will only work as effectively against teams with less speed. Teams like Alabama and Auburn would only attack it and score at will, unless we take chances and force the ball to the sidelines. Thus making us vulnerable to cross court passes and shots from the corners.

Well, in his postgame talk, CTG said he should have gone to the press even earlier than he did.

It was a great adjustment, but I think top tier teams might have better luck if they are the type of team that likes to run. SC is a slow it down team and missing a PG. We don’t run 10 deep right now so we would just wear ourselves down unless we can get Brown and/or Klabzar some action. Not sure how pesky those guys can be on D.

But still nice to see they could turn up some pressure on D and be disruptive. Could be a change of pace type thing if they call it at the right times.

Not many coaches like to press. There are some who live by it, but very few. Gives up too many easy looks on the back end. Teams usually figure it out pretty quickly. Also requires a ton of energy and focus to execute. Works great in travel ball or middle grades, maybe lower level high schools if you have good numbers, but you absolutely have to commit to it at this level. Donovan progressively moved away from it for that reason. Pitino doesn’t use it near as much as he once did.

Billy mentioned this later in his tenure here that the press was less effective over time as players became better and better ball-handlers at this level. It still does take a team out of their rhythm and can be effective that way. In the SC game, however, it was evident early on that their primary ball-handlers were vulnerable, so it was a good strategy against them specifically. We need to be very selective when using the press, because some well-coached teams with great ball-handlers and passers will eat the press up and get easy buckets.

Using the full court press is different than having a 1-2-2, 1-3-1 or 2-2-1 zone defense. Heck, even a box and 1 or triangle and 2 - anything to mix it up. I ABSOLUTELY think we should mix up our defense and use a zone occasionally, as one poster said out of a timeout would be most effective. They have their play or set of plays drawn up based on one defensive scheme and you change the defense on them. Would also like to see us do this more often.

We gave up 2 or 3 easy buckets to SC while pressing, but got much more than that back in points going our way. But SC was vulnerable to that. They better be working on that feverishly this week because other coaches are watching the Gators/SC game film and taking copious notes.

just like good defense yields good offense, the opposite is often true.

the press doesn't work unless we are making our shots, but I can see the press in small doses in attempt to get some "spirtability"

I get that some teams will handle the press easier than others, but SC was surely a team that we needed to at least speed up. Sometimes you just need to change the flow of the game. Even if a team gets some easy buckets, you want to dictate the pace, not be forced into it by the other team.
We are a team that is suspect against the press without a true PG. Sometimes you press just to wear down the other team's ball handler, like teams did to us last season occassionally. There were some games toward the end of he season where Pullin was gassed from breaking the press and it took away from his shooting and ability to finish in the lane.

The amount of steals and missed shots due to chaos created defensively, in the past 2 games…is ridiculous.
