Is it just me or is the internet getting more complicated by the day.

I've been online since the 80s and never really struggled with anything until the last few months. A lot has changed in my life and in my computer world but I feel almost like I am losing it.

My desktop which I quit using a few years back is on an earlier version of windows and my laptop which I used all the time was a Chromebook. A few months back the chromebook crashed and I purchased a Windows 11 laptop. It took some getting used to and I never completely got the hang of it. I think the switch in systems was just a minor part of my problems though. It seems to me like things are just getting more and more complicated by the day. I don't think my current memory issues are helping any either (I've sorta got Joe Biden's disease) and am losing my cognitive abilities lately.

Anyway it just seems to me that things that used to be easy just seem to be getting more complicated. The example that I have been struggling with tonight is getting technical support from Microsoft. The other day I was trying to do something on the laptop and was directed to a Microsoft.com page. After clicking on a few things I realized they were trying to get me to purchase some services. So now I keep getting Emails wanting me to confirm my purchase. I'm not falling for that and have been trying to contact a representative to actually talk to so I can get some information on how to stop this. I keep getting sent to different web pages then run into dead ends.

This crap never used to happen, anybody else find things on the internet a lot more complicated now days or is it just me?

Find an aware high-school kid to help you out. You’ll be waiting for a human longer than Napier picking an OC if you’re going to go through any software company's customer service portal. Going rate is $20-25/hour. And, you’ll make a friend.

Nope, Its happening to everyone. Customer service is dead. If you want to fix something, its hours on the forums or searching google or just biting the bullet and paying them.

It’s not just you. Have you seen what they’ve done to the Apple photos app?

Yep, late 80s to early 90s, my first connection was on an old Tandy1000 connected to a dial up modem. Heck I've been on Gatorcountry since the mid 90s. Although the first few years I was under a different name... If I remember right it was about 1991 when GC changed from one carrier to another and we all had to reregister. That is when I switched Gator515151.

I have never been a tech guy and trying to catch up/keep up. I have started doing as many things as possible on my apps (in my Apple devices) instead of websites. I have also gotten in the habit recently of asking ChatGPT computer questions and am able to troubleshoot things myself with its help.

I recently had ChatGPT create me an excel spreadsheet with the formulas already imbedded. It also helped me blank an old device and to figure out my new Apple Watch.

In many ways, I think it’s all getting more user friendly but I am sure there are tradeoffs with customization and privacy.

If you're in the same shape as Joe Biden, you need to add Fisher-Price to your product lineup. They have a cheap phone with no contract that will work as well for customer service as the one you're using now.

You’re trying to hard. No need to call Microsoft tech support. If you wait long enough they’ll call you offering to fix your computer for free.

The internet was released to the private sector by the War Department on January 1, 1983. AOL went live in 1988.

Every single time I contact AT&T for anything, I have to tell them multiple times that I don't want to upgrade to unlimited data.

Multiple levels of 'security' required these days makes me want to harm someone.

I can no longer log into the credit union with my password....they also need to text me a code. And if I try chatting, the first 5 minutes are answering a series of security questions....when I'm already logged in.

unfortunately the expanded security is needed these days as there are so many crooks out there trying to steal your info

Tilly I found Gator Country in early 1997 not to long after Ray and Gus Garcia took it live on the internet

I think it was at least a few more years before the internet we think of today though. Probably mid 90’s for most. AOL didn’t even introduce email to their service until 1993. It’s kind of crazy every once in awhile seeing someone still using an aol address. I always wonder if maybe they were never able to cancel their aol subscriptions back in the day (when they started bleeding users, one of the tricks was to make it impossible to cancel unless you talked to a csr).

I have 4 email addresses. The one I use most is an old AOL address. Back in the old days all my stuff was tied to an AOL account and it was just easier to keep it that way.

Sprint was the first commercial ISP and it launched in 1992. (Well The World ISP launched publicly in Nov of 1989, but wasnt what we think of as an ISP so much.)

Quantum Link (AOL) was only available on a small assortment of Apple II devices in the late 80's. And then really not in households.

Not just customer service, but user interface, and backward compatibility is in that graveyard as well.

It's probably more complicated, but my guess is that we're just getting older, my friend. I used to be way ahead of the curve and now ... suffice to say I'm not. I just don't care enough. Don't want another app.
