Merrick Garland utterly failed in bringing justice, in the form of a fair trial, to the multiple cases against Trump. Which resulted in approximately 90 felony indictments from citizen grand juries, in a number of different jurisdictions. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a fair trial resulting from multiple grand jury indictments, and it is certainly not lawfare. Of course, Trump was assisted by a corrupt judiciary, but nonetheless Garland failed. Now, he isn't the reason America lost in the 2024 election, which resulted in the election of a felon. But he still failed. Edit : Also, your article, which I am ashamed to say that I did actually click open and read, appears to say little or nothing about blaming Garland for Trump's win. Rather it seems to cite Dems accurately criticizing his failure to do his job. So I guess this is just another deceptive thread title. (And article.)
In anyone is interested in the actual quote, it comes from a Washington Post article. Here is the section on Garland: In private, Biden has also said he should have picked someone other than Merrick Garland as attorney general, complaining about the Justice Department’s slowness under Garland in prosecuting Trump, and its aggressiveness in prosecuting Biden’s son Hunter, according to people familiar with his comments. During the 2020 presidential transition, Biden’s attorney general selection pitted some of his closest aides against each other. Former senator Ted Kaufman (D-Delaware) and Mark Gitenstein, both longtime friends of Biden, advocated for the president naming then-Sen. Doug Jones (D-Alabama) as attorney general, arguing that as a politician he would be better able to navigate the bitterly partisan moment. But Ron Klain, Biden’s incoming chief of staff, pushed for Garland. He stressed that Garland — a federal judge with a sterling reputation for independence and fairness — would show Americans that Biden was rebuilding a department badly shaken by Trump’s political attacks. Biden was persuaded, and some Democrats believe the decision had devastating results. Had the Justice Department moved faster to prosecute Trump for allegedly seeking to overturn the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents, they say, the former president might have faced a politically damaging trial before the election. (Others blame the Supreme Court and a Trump-appointed judge in Florida for repeatedly siding with the former president and delaying the cases; the Justice Department declined to comment.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/12/28/bidens-lonely-battle-to-sell-american-democracy/
No, the law wasn't properly applied and the delay allowed the traitor to string it out and avoid trial. Reading comprehension needs help
And let's not forget the help Trump received from his personal Federal District Court Judge Aileen Cannon who between her erroneous decisions and plain old scheduling delays did nothing to hide her support for the once and future president.
you’ve got two democrats saying garland should have enforced the law sooner. Where do they say it cost them the election?
Right here: "Had the Justice Department moved faster to prosecute Trump for allegedly seeking to overturn the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents, they say, the former president might have faced a politically damaging trial before the election."
You do know that even Democrats were not happy with Bragg bringing the case in NYC because they thought it was frivolous and would make the classified documents case and Jan 6th case look much more political, right?
It is not. The OP's story is based on the Washington Post article. It never actually quotes the Washington Post but it is where the original reporting about Biden believing Garland moved too slow and ended up hurting the Democrats chances in the POTUS race came from.
This. It's bizarre how some people hungrily consume "media" which is clearly deceptive. And fascinating how they are either unable or unwilling to notice that before starting a thread with a deceptive title.
misspoke, terminology, the law never had a chance. garland waited on the J6 commission before he moved forward. there was no reason to wait. the reality is the law wasn't applied because it never got to trial. each time he goes to trial, he loses. he only wins when he bullies a settlement or is given political cover.
So would you say Trump's defense has hindered by the NY Judges in the Bragg case and AG James case with their rulings?
The Grand Jury handed up the indictment in the classified documents case on June 8, 2023. The government requested a trial date in November 2023. It was originally scheduled by Judge Cannon for May 2024. Logically the Federal prosecutors responsible for prosecuting the case (attorneys selected by Special Counsel Jack Smith assisted by attorneys from the National Security Division of the DOJ) would have more than sufficient knowledge in prosecuting classified documents cases (the case was unique only because the defendant was unique, not because the facts were unique). Even assuming that their requested trial date in November 2023 was unreasonable, a date in early 2024 would have been a reasonable compromise.
The fighting on how to handle the classified information in court would have taken a long, long time. And I suspect that Trump's attorneys and/or Smith's team would have likely appealed any of the decision that went against them all the way up to the SCOTUS since they have never weighed in on CIPA or the silent witness rule. 17 months was never enough time for something as logistically challenging as the classified documents case was.
