Most everyone here knows about my feeling for everything UGA. I must put that aside. His dad had a fall in NOLA and died during surgery. Prayers to the Smart family in their time of sadness.
Pretty sad for Kirby, he played hs ball for his dad in high school. It’s probably the reason he went into coaching, prayers for coach smart and his family.
Condolences and prayers for the family. As we grow older falls can have serious, or in this case, devastating consequences. My heart goes out to the family.
No surgery is risk free. Lost a friend during back surgery this past year. Younger women in 30s with kids. Had another friend whose college daughter died, as she waited too long with a sore throat and died with a severe strep infection. Life is so precious. Crazy that a fall while in New Orleans to watch his son’s football game would result in Kirby’s Dad passing. RIP
So sad. Sounds like Coach Smart learned a great deal from his dad. Prayers for Coach Smart and his family.
A lot of things are much bigger and more important than a stupid football game, this is one of them. RIP to him.
The mortality rate within the first year for an elderly person who breaks a hip or femur from a fall is surprisingly high(seen estimates as high as 40%).And even the ones who survive have reduced mobility following recovery due to muscle loss during their period of inactivity. Muscle loss that is extremely difficult for the elderly to replace.
Was going to post the same thing … I think it’s more like 50/50 chance of mortality in 1 year. One of my uncles has somehow survived 2 of them and he’s one of the unhealthiest people I know. RIP
I lived in downtown NOLA for 5 years. Those streets in the Quarter and that whole area around there are absolute garbage, but worse are the sidewalks. I'm surprised more elderly folks don't fall trying to walk around down there. They don't fix anything.
Prior to advent of hip surgery it was a death sentence for a Senior citizen since the victim was confined to bed and a Senior can't survive being bedridden that long.
Yeah, its a mess down there and quite dangerous for pedestrians. I'm sure there are a ton of falls that result in injuries that aren't quite as severe as the one Kirby's Dad experienced, particularly on Bourbon St with all the drinking going on.
