If Spurrier is the standard for offensive playcalling, and Mullen was the next closest thing (as a HC, some shortcomings under Meyer) If my memory serves right, fans have been assailing the offenses for every coach (maybe except Larry Fedora under Zook?) since Spurrier. Frikin Zaunbrecher wouldn’t even look at Spurrier’s playbook with Grossman coming off what should have been a Heisman season. Idiot.
None of them knew what a quick slant was and loved horizontal passes. The last time I thought we had a competent O play calling since Mullen part 1 was when we had Will Grier. That may not even be accurate either, I just though the games were a little more exciting when he was the QB post Tebow and Pre Trask
Zaunbrecher / Zook did defeat Saban / LSU with the bubble screen, which in retrospect, was an amazing feat. IMO, most frustrating was Nussmeier under Mcelwain (a.k.a. S.D.). Mullen immediately picked up transfers Grimes and Jefferson, and when Trask took over, had a great O. After Trask left he made some really poor choices, and never recovered. Weis (a.k.a. The Cheeseburger) was the biggest mistake from a "schematic" point of view. Meyer's team was built for speed and the spread. Chump came in and hired Weis, who was going to bring the pro set, T.O.P style of ball with him. It was a fatal blunder which set our team back many years (IMO).
I spend way too much time watching old gator game highlights on YouTube from back when Spurrier was the coach. What Spurrier did, in tandem with Dwayne Dixon, that was different from everyone else I've seen since, is base so much of the passing game on timing. The 3, 5, and 7 step drops by the qb were part of the timing with the routes the receivers were running. So much repetition at practice with timing on fade routes and crossing routes and deep outs and posts that nobody seems to teach nowadays. You watch these qbs and they drop back a few yards and just stand there flat footed and look around for someone to throw to, waiting for someone to "come open." Watching Grossman take his 5 step drop and then firing the ball to a spot that he knows the receiver will be based on timing is why the offense was so effective. Now with the RPO and read option, the art of that type of passing game is lost.
Seems an elite qb makes an oc elite almost every time. Qb's like Beck and Milroe get oc's seat hot every time too. brady made his coach the goat.
Yes … and no. An elite cia h can make a good qb.. elite. An average coach can make an elite qb.. average. Track would have been wasted under Muschamps. Matthew’s was something like fifth string before Spurrier picked him to lead his team. However I agree having a great Qb covers a lot of playing calling sins. It’s one reason some of us feel we need a dedicated OC to go with our elite qb. He doesn’t have to be spurrier level.. but Napier has to much on his plate to be the OC.
I tend to sgree on getting an oc but i wouldnt at all be surprised if Napier had an offense scoring a ton of points next year either. As far as qbs tgat pkayed for Muschamp, he had multiple ocs and i dont think any of those qbs were any better with different coaching.
I thought Brissett looked the part in the little we played him. Driskel did well at a small school but never really put it together in the league.
I know! Dang! Trask is such a good QB, I hate that he's warming a bench all these years (behind the GOAT and now the biggest comeback story of a #1 pick). It's not in his DNA to ask to be traded, totally team first guy!
Id sit right there and collect that check. If he gets a chance to start, he will have to sink or seim and he could be out of a job. Hes close to pension already.
