At some point the nfl is going to be materially impacted, and that’s when the fun will really start.

Thought you had that already with 4 years plus one year as a redshirt year.

You do and can even be more with some petitions. I think there was a tight end somewhere that was playing college ball for 9 years or something crazy like that.

The Supreme's slapped the NCAA hard about restraint of trade. I wonder when they will re-assess the NFL's age restrictions which are an even more egregious restraint of trade to benefit only their members.

Ive never understood how that could legally be enforced in any sport. Take that shit to russia or china. We should be able to be gainfully employed by whoever will have us. Im sure tge nfl likes to see their product developed before buying the cow but it just seems wrong.

Interesting concept. If enforced correctly, this may help teams with less bluechips on their roster. Imagine 3 stars who stick around in the same system fr 5 years, they may be able to compete with teams with unexperienced one-and-dones. Of course, there will be teams who will abuse the heck out of any rule there is.

And a team like Duke buying a QB and a few other key players might make more sense.

Collegiate sports and the concept of a student athlete is a total sham.

It's already gone to court- a WR took the NFL to court on this one. (Forgot which WR.)
A court (not sure if District or Supreme) said the age restriction was fine because the NFL was unionized, and it was part of the union agreement.

And related point- the NCAA can get around a lot of stuff by
    1) making the athletes employees
    2) letting them unionize.
    3) putting in something with the union- like restrictions on transfers, etc.

But then will the athletes be students? IMO probably not.
And if not, then could that blow up the appeal of -COLLEGE- football?

Actually I thought it was Maurice Clarett, a RB from OSU, but I reserve the right to be wrong like I have many times before

Maybe the next one to sue should take another course and sue the Union rather than the NFL. Particularly if they reside in a Right to Work State. :D

If we really want students to also play sports, then the question has to be asked why a graduate student could not play sports? We would never restrict a person from education at a university just because they were 29 years old. But that student doesn’t deserve the opportunity of an 18 year old, and why do can’t students who take 6 years to graduate play 6 years?

All the above is not serious but only to point out the absurdity of calling these athletes students, for if you call them students then treat them like students (no random rules). As pointed out by a poster above, this is all resolved by a contract with players’ union that has eligibility limits (as well as limits on transferring and outside income). Otherwise, treat them as students and they will sue that as students they shouldn’t be subject to restraints normally applied only to employees.

Not any time soon for two big reasons. The NFLs anti-trust exemption and the three year post HS graduation rule is a collectively bargained (negotiated) agreement.

Claret sued the NFL, saying he should be able to enter the NFL draft only one year out of high school. The courts sided with the NFL.
