Good thread. This was the wrap up:

"You can see where I’m going with this. A casual perusal of the data shows that this isn’t a program for the top 0.1% of talent, as it’s been described. This is simply a way to recruit hundreds of thousands of relatively lower-wage IT and financial services professionals."

What isn’t in the thread is how H-1B’s are historically “compliant” workers with the hope of a green card sponsorships. However, H-1B’s are trending towards not wanting to stay in the US.

This is an interesting thread with good posts, but it's yet another Trump related topic that begs the question : Why are we even having this discussion.

Specifically : Trump has a well-documented history of using both foreign and undocumented (illegal) workers. Of course he doesn't give a **** about American workers. What, did he start to care in his 70's?

And Musk obviously cares only about profit, market share and himself.

Neither of them care about MAGA, America, or American labor. To entertain the notion that they do is really just legitimizing these charlatans.

Note : in staying true to the con, Elmo seems to be publicly backing down a little. They're apparently going to at least pretend, for the benefit of gullible MAGA voters.

because the dem establishment allowed the biden entourage to keep him in the race way too long and then forced a terrible candidate on the american people...dems have some really strong leaders, and a really lousy selection process

It goes back further than that, after Sanders won the New Hampshire primary in 2020, the Dem establishment was desperate to keep the nomination away from Sanders. Biden went to South Carolina and made a deal with Clyburn that if he helps him win the nomination he would pick a "black woman" as his VP. Now start with what you wrote and that is what got the Dems in the situation they found themselves.

So The Trump/Musk immigration solution is to give the jobs American want (STEM) to immigrants, but run the lower paid immigrants out of the country so Americans can fill those fruit picker and dishwasher jobs? Congrats on what you voted for.

Seems that way. Is the argument being advanced here that we only want certain races because they are "smarter?"

I'm sure they're not going to come out and say it but that seems to be what's happening. IBM's not hiring IT people from Mexico. They would be cheaper too.

Well, at least we can stop with the notion that this is anything but racism (in this case, the notion that certain races are smarter than other races). BTW, given the free trade between Mexico and the US, many firms do hire Mexican engineering and IT personnel from Mexico. They just often do it in Mexico. Check out what has happened in Guadalajara or Monterrey, for example. Meta, Apple, Netflix, and Google all have facilities in Guadalajara and Tesla is planning a facility in Monterrey.

It's driven by cheaper labor but they want people who can perform the jobs at a high level.

My career was in IT and our overseas people were almost exclusively from India. Never from Mexico. Maybe that's changing.

I think it is a shame that the US is returning to a racist determination of "good" and "bad" immigrants. I suspect that there has always been an element of that, but it does seem like it is becoming more open now. And yes, there is terrific talent in Mexico in all industries. Heck, Tata Consultancy have a major presence there.
