Why did no one help her? Fatal subway burning exposes New York City’s sad disconnect to humanity

Fatal subway burning exposes NYC's sad disconnect to humanity

The bystanders were too busy filming. The cops? Well, instead of wrapping their jackets around a burning woman in an F train stopped at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station on Sunday morning, they walked by.

Then there was Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, the animal charged with lighting the match that set the innocent subway rider on fire — thus igniting a hellscape that feels like a metaphor for New York City’s decaying underground.

Zapeta-Calil is an illegal migrant from Guatemala who burned a sleeping woman because, quite simply, he could. He fears no authority because there are few consequences for breaking the law here.

Back in May of 2023, Penny didn’t hesitate to jump in and to protect his fellow New Yorkers from a subway maniac, who later died. The former Marine was rewarded by our Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg with criminal charges, a year and a half of hell, and a five-week trial. Thankfully, he was acquitted, but the hangover remains.

This is so sad and disgusting. And then you have a group on TH who will try to turn this about race, and then there's the other part the left that ignore this and say American citizens commit more crime than illegal, like that makes it any better. Americans are scared to help others in fear of being arrested or called a racist, thanks to the whacky left

He was deported on Trump's watch. Came back into the country at some point most likely under the current administration.

It sure is heartening to see how OP voted for a felon hates crime.

It sure is awesome how OP doesn't mind a non-American spending $250 million on a presidential election, or a POTUS's wife having violated immigration laws is a real stickler for America and immigration rules.

After the last guy who tried to help people on the subway got charged with manslaughter, can you blame people for not getting involved?

Stands as evidence that every NYC subway car needs a Daniel Penney.

He originally entered and was deported in 2018. He could have reentered the US again during the first Trump Administration. Undocumented immigrants who have been deported frequently try to reenter the US shortly after they were deported.

The crass politicization with no empathy for this horrible event on here is no better than the idiots who filmed but didn’t help. But many of y’all can only point fingers across the aisle these days. It’s pathetic.

Bad comparison… the guy that Penney murdered was yelling at people and acting like a jerk, but wasn’t harming anyone.

Uhhhhh .... yeah ... that's my point. Pretty sure no one would question intervening in that situation. Penny was charged because, by all accounts, the man he killed was drugged up and yelling at people, but was unarmed and had not harmed or attempted to harm anyone...

Can’t think of a time I’ve ever been scared of being called a racist. What are you doing that makes you scared?

Another question for you: have you ever heard of the bystander effect?
