The Canes lost a home game to Mount St Mary’s to fall to 4-8. They’ve lost 8 of their last 9. The SOW also lost today to drop to 0-2 in the ACC. I like it
Maybe Larranaga will finally retire. Once a very good coach, but not looking so good at 75. Finished with a losing record last year also. Of course same could be said for Hamilton at FSU who is now 76.
Let's hope they stretch it out for another few years before being put out to pasture, and ultimately the glue factory, like Bobby Bowden.
Barring a once in a lifetime coach or some insane NIL money, they will never be consistently good in basketball. Little to no history, little to no fan support, no high level local recruiting, limited school money with the ACC contract, mediocre facilities, and now a waning ACC overall. So let them hire whoever.
Both are way past their prime but over his career, Larranaga has been a much better coach than Hamilton. Ole Leonard has somehow been able to coach for 33 years at Power 5 schools without ever making a Final 4 and only has won two regular season conference titles and one conference tournament championship. No clue why FSU keeps him around but I’m glad they do.
Imagine being 75 or 76 and having to deal with the NIL, high school recruiting and transfer portal landscape. Also, now that everyone is getting paid, it's tougher to get recruits based solely on your coaching ability and track record (not just a bag full of money under the table).
No doubt. I wouldn't want to deal with all that but some guys like coaching I guess and don't want to leave. Interestingly, when Larranaga was hired he was already in his early 60s and there was some speculation that he would be there a few years, upgrade the program and then retire. Guess not.
He is a likeable guy and a good coach and he did upgrade them for a while. But sooner or later the game passes you by. Always best to go out on a high rather than get forced out.
Miami Herald reporting that Miami hoops coach, Larranaga is set to step down possibly today. They couldn't wait until season's end?
