Were these not loans that should have been forgiven under current law? It says they are for public service employees.

People who had their loan forgiven:

• Public servants
• Paid on their loan for 10 years so the payments have well exceeded the borrowed amount

So no one is getting their education free.. they are just getting the interest paid off.

 

This is why Trump won, people want indentured servants. You libs just dont get it.

 

I'll be interested to see if this effort actually makes into '25. Most of Biden's attempts to do this have been stopped by the Courts.

 

SAVE, IDR, and PSLF are all fine. Those 3 were $150B+ in forgiveness… or something like that.

 

This is one that I am not a fan of. If they were duped into borrowing the money from a predator lending entity, maybe, and that's a big maybe. Taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook for your decision to go to school for some career that won't pay enough to pay it off. Hand up not a hand out.

 

Public service is for people who can afford an expensive education, I guess.

 

Loan forgiveness is just the other side of a targeted tax break for the middle class. The GOP could do the same with a college tuition tax credit in the form of a tax cut.

My DIL is a teacher and she paid her's off. She came from a poor family, so she also had living expenses in there.

What can we do to make college more affordable? It's gotten out of hand. Public universities get our money too, right? There's a real con job going on there.

 

This qualifies as something "more substantial than an inane, "This is interesting" right @rivergator and @tilly?

 

If I understand some of the posts here, these were loans that qualified under existing forgiveness programs. Loan forgiveness programs have been in existence for decades.

 

I would rather subsidize tuition up front than forgive loans on the backend, but ultimately you really shouldnt have to pay for college at a public school. The problem is that like most things in a America, the market makes things more expensive and the only really "market" solution to costs on things people need is giving people money to pay for it. Sort of like we did with the ACA and healthcare. Its better than what was before because more people can afford it, but its really inefficient compared to a universal, single payor type of system.

 

I could be wrong, but don't think that taxpayers are on the hook for anything here.

 

Having an educated society is expensive. Yet, Gov has consistently reduced appropriations for higher ed. That's one of the reasons for tuition increases.

 

I think Student Loans are easily the most profitable government program ever. We could forgive all debt and it wouldnt "cost" us anything, because of all the interest we've collected over decades. Most of what is being forgiven here is literally just interest.
