But, OK- due tell. What is your breakdown of Gumbs, Douglas and Kofi? Tell us what ya know. Are you just gettin’ yur bitch on, or as it’s called here on Swamp Gas- “being Crusher”, or do you have some insight?

 

Once he matured and got those Bubba teeth though, He was something else

 

Lots of LBs got better throughout their career after starting out slowly. Some of that has to do with the lines play in front of them and a lot has to do with mentally processing faster and confidently. Not everyone starts out as a difference maker like a ridiculously physically gifted Harold Perkins did for LSU. Ventrell Miller, Reese, Bates etc became really good players for us over time.

 

Sure no problem:

Gumbs (bargain basement winner...played great after getting acclimated in the Gator D)
Douglas (bargain basement loser....hasn't found many tackle opportunities that he couldn't miss)
Kofi (bargain basement "X"....we'll see next Fall)

 

Most 18-year-olds need to turn into 20-year-olds

 

Especially with NIL where he knows he can make some cash in college.

 

Verse was a first team all conference player at Albany with 9.5 sacks the year before he transferred to FSU.

Gumbs was a TE playing edge for first time the season before transferring to UF. Had 3.5 sacks as he learned the position. (He actually never attended Cincy…decommitted from Cincy to attend Florida after playing at Northern Illinois.

Verse was much more a known commodity (even at a lower division) as he had over two dozen FBS offers out of the portal, including Miami, Tenn, and other SEC teams.

Gumbs had Cincy and Florida.

Gumbs was a good eval and technically was a bargain. Verse was not. He cost a good bit of NIL but worked out well for fsu.

 

Yeah verse was known and while I can't say if it was the injury or just the step up in competition or both but slackman was also a well known commodity at a lower level. Just saying that when someone brought up a little skepticism because slackman and others underperformed, guys like verse were everything they were built up to be.

Can break either way with guys from lesser leagues

 

totally agree. It’s not unlike the nfl draft. 50% of first round picks are total busts. And yet the nfl spends thousands of hours scouting, watching film, interviewing players and anyone and everyone they know, the combine, pro days…usually over an extended time period. Their scouts are the best of the best. And yet…they still bomb 50% of the time in round 1.

College coaches have far less time with far less resources to evaluate kids moving up from lower levels so it should be even harder for them with more potential misses.

Brandon Siler was good right from the jump though. I recall when he came in as a true freshman he was lighting up the other teams RB. He didn't need much development, he was already there.
