I thought this deserved its own thread because it's a pretty big deal. Can Trump supporters explain why Trump would want to eliminate (not just raise) the debt ceiling? Why would they need to eliminate the debt ceiling if Elon Musk is going to cut trillions in spending?

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/12/19/trump-debt-limit-shutdown/

President-elect Donald Trump has stunned lawmakers in Washington by calling for the suspension — or outright elimination — of the federal borrowing limit, introducing an explosive new demand into last-minute negotiations over averting a government shutdown this weekend.

In social media posts and interviews on Wednesday and Thursday, Trump called on congressional Republicans to lift the debt ceiling, a law that limits how much money the federal government can borrow. House GOP leaders unveiled a proposal Thursday evening to fund the government and suspend the debt limit for two years. Trump quickly endorsed the measure, though it failed in a House vote on Thursday evening, and the next step for the legislation is unclear.

I mentioned this in the budget thread and was met with crickets, the only attention it got was moderators extracting my use of morons in describing Trump supporters who thought getting rid of the debt ceiling was a terrible idea a year or two ago (and for the record, I deeply regret using such language. Really. I do. )

The interesting thing to me is the far right budget hawks caucus didn’t bite - pinning Trump with a loss even before he steps into office.

I predict Trump approval rating will be below 30% by summer.

The Dems are pretending that the debt ceiling was simply a ceiling that could not be breached, when in fact every time the vote came up to raise it they were the ones that voted for it.

Not only that, but having to come up with an Omnibus or CR bill was just another opportunity for them and the RINOs to add in all the "goodies" (pure freaking pork) that the Dems were waiting to vote into that bill every so many months.

So, the reason why these Dems and RINOs voted this latest clean bill down is that'd have to wait 2 full years to get more pork into the next dept ceiling bill that would indeed raise the debt ceiling as sure as they have before...

The Dems are RINOs were not going to let an opportunity to bilk the taxpayers go away with this one bill. They need a CR every so many months to continue the GRIFT.

So, stop pretending that having an open ceiling for two years is any different than it would have been had they just signed on to this bill.

The only difference from this latest bill is that President Trump would have controlled the spending and the Dems would be left out of their CR (theft and pork as usual) GRIFT.

Same… I posted this on the “Trumpnomics” thread. The GOP is in disarray. The GOP aren’t capable of governing with slim margins. Its seems pretty clear that the House is in trouble and President Musk will be drafting EO’s all day.

What is the magical line when someone becomes a RINO? Massie voted it down. Most wouldn’t put him in the RINO crash.

They don't care about our democracy. Or crime, or rape. Or elections or the truth. So why should we expect them to care about the economy or debt?

They care about Trump. Whatever he says.

Oh, and they also care about......

Voting on the “debt ceiling” is a preposterous exercise anyway, since the brinksmanship involves threatening default over spending which Congress itself already authorized. So Trump is actually correct to want to see that nonsense ended.

This has been the left’s point. Now it is politically convenient for a lame duck incoming President.

I hope you’re sitting down BLING. I agree with you 100%. If the Debt Ceiling actually had any meaning then the morons in congress would not have authorized spending that would accumulate this level of debt. The debt ceiling is meaningless other than a political theatre that opens for one show every few years.

I actually liked the concept of the Sequester back in the Obama days, but as he always does, he used it to target a specific sector that he did not care for. If they had broadened the cuts across all sectors it could have been effective.

I know you're trying to be funny, and also trying to be insulting....but sadly you did neither.

That photo I believe you are referring to was originally posted by someone else. A different Trump supporter who was also unable to use words to make a cogent point. Seems to be a trend?

Edit; oh I see now. You meant my wife is the gold cow with a Trump face, that all the Trumpies are cultishly worshipping. Not the picture of a female. Weird.

Why would my wife look like a golden cow-Trump? Why would Trumpies worship her like she were their spiritual icon, Jesus Trump ?

Just a weird post man. I don't think I like you trying to insinuate yourself into my life.

I think eliminating the debt ceiling is ridiculously dumb.

Really? Raising the debt ceiling authorizes borrowing for spending that's already been mandated. The debt ceiling itself wasn't mandated until 1917 and the controversy and political theater over raising it is much more recent. The reality is that if Congress actually refused to raise the debt ceiling it would be necessary to cut spending across the board and that would include Social Security, Medicare, defense spending including military salaries and maintenance and payments on contracts with the federal government. Trump's proposal to eliminate it is one his few ideas that actually make sense although he wants to do it now so he can blame it on a Democratic president while also eliminating the possibility that he can be blamed by low information righties for raising it in the future.

The following is from a column by Samuel Clench an Australian commentator and it says it all regarding the current state of the US government.
