Chicken pot pie is the classic. Turkey is similar so it works. Beef doesn't do it for me. Never made a steak and ale pie, though.

Shepherd's pie with lamb is nice.

Going on the English trend Cornish Pastie is something we make quite often.

Tonight is a do-over on chili over rice topped with shredded sharp cheddar cheese.

It has been a needed rain day here.

Ice cold longnecks and chilled wine work well today.

    Same here.

Yesterday I planted out a huge zamia furfuracea (cardboard palm but not a palm. @Bazza will know what they are) and some other things in my yard. The cycad was left by a previous renter. I didn't water it in because I expected the rain today.

Speaking of renters I finally got a replacement oven latch for the GE electric range. I have no idea how it broke but I will replace it tomorrow.

Tonight is a night where we expect to serve the same thing tomorrow. My wife left for work today saying not to make dinner without first asking her. OK. So I called her up and she was all upon me making chicken tinga for tacos. I was down with that but tomorrow we need to have something easy and OK to eat watching TV because we will be watching the Gators vs Stanford volleyball match. She said make a lot of chicken tinga for tacos so you don't need to cook other than warming things up. Her wish is my command.

And both dinners pair well with margaritas and I did resupply our house with Cointreau and limes today. Might need to get some more Espolon blanco and a lime just in case the Lady Gators win tomorrow and then we would also need a Victory Margarita. I should trademark that.

Tonight’s supper is fitting for today’s weather. We’re having Ms. Jan’s chicken pot pie with brown’n serve rolls.

Today our high was 38* with windy conditions-it felt like 27* the most of the day.

I’ve got fasting bloodwork first thing in the morning. Just regular stuff.

Yes, very familiar. Dang things will slice you up if you're not protected with proper clothing! I tend to work in shorts and short-sleeved shirts so have lots of battle scars to show over the years.

I love this plant though. Gotta give them a big area to accommodate their eventual spacious growth habit.

I have a triangular spaced trio of them here at my house and have trimmed them back a few times as they encroached where I didn't want - my fault when I originally planted them.

I had a handful "left over" in pots here after closing down my business and ended up donating them to my friend who owns a nursery, along with a variety of other odds and ends. Adonidias, a Dwarf Sugar Palm, an Areca Palm, and some large Orange Birds (of Paradise).

I still have some stuff to clear out. You "accumulate" when in the trades....nature of the beast! I'll get a handle on it this coming year.

And while it's true they are commonly called Cardboard Palms...I call them Cardboard "Plants" - the same way I refer to a Travelers Palm as a Travelers "Tree"....just to avoid the subject entirely. ;)

Speaking of palms....I've gone almost 100% to Crownshaft palms at my place, Lurk. I'm fortunate enough to be in a hardiness zone and due to the surrounding bodies of water tempered enough to accommodate many of these species.

I have quite a few - and a pretty good selection. One that I really like is a native to Japan even....a Satakentia liukiuensis that I planted as 3 gallon and is now a solid twelve footer with nicely pronounced trunk.

I have few other interesting varieties still in their pots I hope to get planted this coming year.

Look this one up too, Lurk.....Ptychosperma schefferi. I have probably a dozen of these I sourced from a small grower in Wellington, where my step brother lives. I enlisted his help in the transport as they were in 1 gallon pots and they routinely came this way on various family outings. They've all been moved up since then and are ready to go in the ground when I find space.

Quick funny story...while on the phone with the grower, I mentioned to him the two Ptychosperma lineare I had....and he said these schefferi "eat those for lunch!" :D

Another here is a Dypsis pembana I built my front deck around...the canopy now above the roofing panels.....now I just have to keep the new sprouts cleared at the base. It's canopy will provide some nice climate control during the hot time of year. IMG_8047.JPG

The chicken tinga was such a hit last night that there isn't enough left for everyone tonight. SO I am supplementing with some ground turkey taco meat.

    Neat plants @Bazza.

The cool plants I have in my yard are some unusual cycads. Cycas bifida is probably the most unusual one to find in a home landscape.

Making thai red curry with chicken. Ran out of Red Boat fish sauce and my Asian market was also out of it. Using some Viet Huong 3 Crab fish sauce that I found in our pantry. It seems to be acceptable.

What really sets the dish off is the kaffir lime leaves that I put in from a tree that I have. It is a hard to find thing in Gainesville.

My wife wanted a chopped salad so I made one.

Not exactly what I would make on a chill day but it was good.

Vegetable beef soup. Pound & 1/2 of chuck simmering now. I’ll do the veg dump in 90 min or so. Green beans, limas, corn, potatoes and carrots. Onion & celery is braising with the beef. Also added some Guinness stout. I’ve made this a few times before and always turns out great.

Picked up some fresh artesian bread this morning to have with. And saltines are optional

Tonight we’ll be having a pot of beef stew with potatoes, onions, carrots, and celery.

I will fry cornbread for our side.

Ice cold longnecks for me and Ms. Jan’s sticking with her chilled wine.

It’s been a rain day here today.

    Lovely.

I would pair that with super dark black bread and vodka shots in chilled shot glasses.

Grilling some brats on the KJ with a side of German potato salad. There are a gazillion different ways to make German potato salad. Mine has a lot of bacon and a flour roux using the bacon fat with onion, sugar and spices as the coating. Fresh flat leaf parsley from my garden to add something healthy and green. LOL.

Funny story about German food and the lack of anything green. Many years ago I spent some time in Munich before going to a technical conference in the Bavarian alps. I was dying for something green to eat so my wife and I went to an Italian place for dinner so I could get a gruner salat (green salad). Nice dinner. At the end when they brought out the digestif drink menu I didn't see grappa and I asked about it. The waiter's eyes went wide with an even wider smile. I got a nod and he sped off. I spent a long time drinking shots of grappa with the owner and the kitchen staff. All comped.

Speaking of digestifs I am having some absinthe with a sugar cube and water. I have a Pernod spoon, BTW. I had two and gave one to a lovely friend. Not required but it is a nice touch.

Lighting the drink is not original and I don't approve.

OK, Christmas Eve I am cooking for 20+ and on Christmas I am cooking for 14 or so.

A few don't eat meat but I think a few of them eat fish. It will be two full days of cooking.

What are you guys cooking for Christmas?

For the last few years we have baked a turducken. And then Boomer classics—green bean casserole, fried yellow squash. Tomato and basil salad. My wife’s from Charleston, so she makes pecan pie with vinilla ice cream

We will stay pretty traditional as with Thanksgiving. Alan will smoke a turkey and a shank portion ham.

Ms. Jan will make our cornbread dressing and giblet gravy. She will also fix a pot of chicken’n’dumplings. We will also make our cream 40’s & petite butter beans, yellow squash and onions casserole, deviled eggs, and yeast rolls. Added in edit: I forgot to include turnip greens.

Kayla will make her sweet potato casserole topped with chopped pecans, cinnamon, and butter and watergate salad.

Abbey is our baker-she will bake an Italian cream cake, a pecan pie, and an assortment of homemade cookies.

    Merry Christmas to all!

God bless the South for raising us on cornbread dressing and giblet gravy instead of stuffing—and that’s all I’ve got to say about that…..
