I wonder if the committee takes away more from a team's bad loss, or do they reward good wins over ranked opponents more? SEC losses should not count against a team as much as some other conference losses do.

Most of the SEC teams saw play harder than other conferences, and there is much more parity this season than in the past. And it seemed like the top 10 in the SEC could win on any giving Saturday against any other team. Just look at Vanderbilt and what was up with Kentucky early on in the season. South Carolina won their fair share, and so did the Mighty Gators.

Losing to these teams listed above should not be as detrimental to one's overall strength of schedule as in other conferences. For this, I see no reason why anyone in the SEC should schedule hard power five OOC teams in the future, which sill suck for the fans...

There are too many crappy conferences that are getting equal considerations that should NOT.

There are two excellent football conferences, and the rest are less than great conferences. That SOS has to matter more than it obviously does right now.
Although I think the SEC is the deepest, most talented conference in the country.

Bring back the SOS computer rankings.

This is why their will never be a "happy" solution or narrative to a playoff system. Their wil always be someone left out, cries of:
"We were descriminated against because no one took into account our SOS"
"We were descriminated against because of our lack of SOS" and "we can only play who is in front of us"

No one can argue that BAMA didn't have a decent schedule and beat some good teams. But BAMA, since Saban arrived, and long before, ALWAYS had that "perception" advantage that equated to them getting a one game "gimme" year after year after year.

It suits me just fine they got left out for once, their fan base is insufferable. They claim national titles with 6 loses on their resume.
Bama would claim national titles after LOSING bowl games. See Bama / Notre Dame in the 70's on that one.

This argument will never end, unless every team makes the playoffs. Someone always gets left out. Penn State one year when unbeaten, got left out (before the playoff system). Happened to Auburn, Happened to FSU last year.

Lets face it, the SEC thinks they are better than everyone else and see's 4th - 6th SEC finishes as making "their team" better than everyone else outside the SEC.

Hey, I'm in that same place now with the Gators. If UF goes 9-3 with this years schedule or next years, does anyone in Gator Nation believe UF does not deserve a playoff shot? Conference Championship games? (Get rid of them). Ask UGA if they want to see Texas a third time.

Agree with latter sentiment. I am frequently baffled by the idea that "SEC Pride" creates some implicit obligation to pull for the conference. The SEC has given this Gator plenty of reasons to be skeptical the conference gives a damn about our program. And that is the only program I care about.

Unfortunately, we're in an era where we really don't have a choice. More SEC teams means more money for everyone and we're going to need more and more money to maintain competitiveness.

Yeah, but there's a difference between arguing who deserves to be in the first round between those ranked 14-20 and getting two guaranteed second round games featuring ASU and Boise St. I was actually excited about the possibilities of a playoff, but was immediately deflated looking at that bracket.

Penn St. at +575 is a joke. I wonder what odds I could get that they WON'T win the national title. Obviously, these are based on the layout of the bracket, because Tennessee at 35-1 seems like a great bet, but you have to factor in that they Play Ohio State, then Oregon. Tough two games no matter who you are...

I will say this, Penn St might have the easiest path to the semifinals, and maybe the finals if Georgia has no QB. Play Oregon or Texas in the finals, they just took Oregon to the wire. No, I don’t think they’re all that, but the committee did them a solid.

Yep. This is just disturbing. I know I'm harping on the same thing: comparing apples to oranges as to who gets in . . . but this is ridiculous. First that they're even in and worse, that they get first round byes!

Indiana in with the second weakest schedule of any play-off team? Florida should cancel all non-SEC games that are challenging, pay the cancellation fee and play the same game: create a cupcake schedule. Some may disagree but that's clearly the road to the play-offs, IMO.

Boise doesn't deserve a bye but ASU was 4-0 against ranked teams and won their conference. They were underrated all season while Boise was over-hyped.

    I guess. It's just. . . Meh.

    16 Teams. 8 On-Campus games.

Won't "solve" everything, but much more fun for the fans.

Also, in a weird way, the teams that get byes actually get screwed by not getting all the monetary benefits - both for the program and overall community - of that home game. Which would probably be the most profitable game of the year. I'm surprised, given all the money grubbing, that this hasn't come up. Maybe it will when they see the paydays of those who did host games.

Pretty dead on. I'd say a lot of schools are questioning Sankey especially. Big (Whatever) came out fine. ACC is over-represented and one of those spots is an SEC slot.

    From the article:

Big Ten and SEC officials, as well as other highly placed sources around college athletics, believe that leaders will re-examine the first-round bye rule, potentially seeding the field in alignment with the rankings. If that happened this year, the top four seeds would be No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Texas and No. 4 Penn State. The 8-9 game would feature Boise State-Indiana, instead of Ohio State-Tennessee, for instance.

There is another potential alteration, too.

During CFP negotiations in the spring, the Big Ten proposed a 12- or 14-team bracket that designated three automatic berths each for the SEC and Big Ten, two each for the ACC and Big 12, one for the highest-ranked Group of Five champion and one or three at-large selections. The automatic berths would presumably be based on conference standings.

Such a concept — multiple automatic bids — may come with a reimagining of conference championship weekend. At the very least, officials have discussed a play-in style conference tournament where winners punch their bids into the playoff. For instance, if the Big Ten gets three automatic bids, perhaps their No. 3 and No. 4 seeds meet in a play-in game.

Good article and fans should read it. I don't think we see what we got this year beyond this year. It's so wrong.

Wouldn't there always be a team "in with the second weakest schedule of any playoff team?" ;)
IU went 11-1 and deserves to be in the playoff this year.

I understand what you're saying, but I think winning a conference title should mean something and be rewarded. If other teams are better they will beat them.
