I can’t imagine Austin was calling the defense second half of the year, and now leaving UF for Houston for the same position. My guess is he saw his role being diminished and moved on. The defense his first and second year were not good, I wish him the best at Houston.

Not signed with him, but maybe they could've connected better with him due to age. Don't know if it was because he was on the field from UCF onward or that Roberts was in the box that made the difference in the defense. Remember, the players wanted some sort of change. We just don't know what it was they wanted, Armstrong down on the field or not.

We've been hearing this whole time that Austin Armstrong was the one behind it and Roberts was hindering it. I hope that's wrong if we are going to lose Armstrong. The defense was what turned the season around for us.

I heard Roberts was the one behind it.

If that is true, it may explain why Armstrong is moving on. Napier may have realized he didn't need Armstrong, and wasn't willing to extend his contract.

I would bet they are. 1.3 is what people at the upper end of FCS schools get. Houston is a Big 12 school and can afford it.

Actually, the opposite kind of makes sense. If it was Armstong, how do you explain the defensive performance last year and the beginning of this year?

This, coupled with not getting a contract extension and leaving an SEC gig for Houston probably tells us all we need to know.

yeah, because the defense was much better when it was just Armstrong by himself.

I would think that if Roberts was hindering the defense and Armstrong was the genius behind the defensive turnaround after the bye week, then Napier would have let Roberts go and given Armstrong an extension and a raise.

Since that didn't happen, it seems more likely that Roberts was the reason for the resurgence of the defense. And Armstrong had to go.

Remember that Brian Johnson was made the OC at Utah when he was only 25, and had been a coach for all of 2 years. It didn't work, and he was encouraged to move on after only 2 seasons. He did, worked at several places, gained experience and is now considered to be an excellent OC/passing game coordinator at the NFL level. Most Gators fans would love to have him back as our OC.

The point being that sometimes it takes a few years of experience before your coaching potential is reached. Perhaps it will be so for Armstrong.

Oh well. Our defense played well at the end of the year because we had good player not because of a specific coach

I wish some journalist would do some journalism and tell us what changed at the bye week and who was responsible for it.

They were the same defensive players we had at the beginning of the season, when the defense was routinely getting torched. Something changed during the bye week.
