The article below initiated this post. I would love to hear from those who have a take on how we get to the 105 limit. It sounds as though the Gators will have to be judicious about scholarships and who walk on will be.

Welcome to the new reality. It isn't pretty but it IS real, as long as EVERYONE has to play by the same rules. Bigger budget? sure, but I am talking about bodies as it relates to a hard cap.

Here's a wild guess about how the 20 walk-on spots will be distributed for the 2025 season. Hard to tell before the portal additions are determined.

    QB 2
    RB 1
    WR 2
    TE 2
    OL 3
    DE 2
    DT 2
    LB 2
    DB 4

NIL is still a black hole to most. Not even going to touch other sports, including those that are not revenue generating

Specifically to that limit of 105, who is eligible for NIL money? In theory, could Lagway have his scholarship pulled and still receive much more in NIL money?

    We currently have 7 QB's?
    Only 2 are worth anything.

    Quarterback (7)
    • Clay Millen
    • DJ Lagway
    • Tramell Jones (Signee)
    • Aidan Warner*
    • Paul Kessler*
    • Aaron Williams*
    • Lawrence Wright IV*

Serious question: Can a player be a walk-on and also receive NIL money?

Interesting question you pose? Does a player have to be on scholarship to receive NIL money? I would think so, but that player would be one of the 105, eh? And if a scholarship player sustains a season ending injury does he count at all?

Cormani McClain would be my guess as one fitting that scenario.

You must have been off the grid around the time we played Texas.;)

It is you who are off “the grid” if you think any of those young men are worthless as UF football players. Did you see Jackson Dart throw back-to-back interceptions against us? Bad game but he’s not worthless. Nor are any of our QB’s. Our entire team, not just our freshman QB starting his first college game, had a bad game against Texas. In case you were “off the grid” I’ll tell you what happened afterward: They rebounded.

Absolutely....NIL is completely separated from the scholarship aspect.

Yep, and that's why they put a hard limit on players. I still think the limit should be at least 120.

This is the real question here. I was thinking the same thing.

At some point its just a loop-hole. Your "walk-ons" would get NIL enough to cover all of their expenses related to school/housing/food etc. So in the end it would basically be equal to a scholarship.

Injuries happen... but 7 seems like a bit much. Where was Shane Matthews listed on SOS's team? How far down that list? Or was that some other QB that played for SOS. However, as long as Lagway stays healthy, that's a moot point.

105 is far too prohibitive for the college football world. I guess they know that many schools were paying NIL to all their players, including the walk-ons. I think 115 is the right number.

    I agree with this.

I think the Idea is to force kids to move on to other schools where they can make the roster. Stinks for some kids who know they have no NFL dreams, but want to be apart of a program like a Florida, Tennessee, Bama etc. You basically do not allow them to be on the team, so either give up football, or move onto a team where you will possibly see the field.
