Scheduling Out Of Conference Games In The New CFP Format

Saban had it right. The problem was that the polls did not reward teams for strength of schedule. Change that and the right teams get in.
Except....people will always have their biases and will always argue. (Points to signature.)

 

South Carolina with zero bad losses & winners of six straight, should've gone over Indiana. Probably Ole Miss as well with one narrow bad loss to UK but then they creamed USCe & UGA. SMU probably should've been left out as well. Sorry Alabama, two bad losses.

Agreed. But one has to believe that Bama would likely crush Indiana and SMU both.

 

I see no reason to GIVE that football program any lifeline.

 

Definitely frustrating for sure seeing Indiana get in. I do agree with Saban and maybe 10 conference games makes sense. Indiana would have ended up playing one of the tougher B10 teams I would hope in a 10 game conference schedule.

 

Maybe add some qualifiers.

Everyone has to play the same number of conference games.

I think playing an FCS school should be a disqualification, but definitely not more than one.

Really need to see more cross conference play.

Or just eliminate the committee and go back to the computers.

 

I seem to recall someone doing the math on that a while back and there’s not enough teams for everyone to play an all fbs schedule. Maybe there’s enough to limit it to one? Biggest losers in that deal would be the fcs schools. Those paydays keep the doors open for entire athletic departments.

 

I would be ok with going back to the bcs formula and take the top 12 as is. Keep the current format with top four as byes etc. but without all the current conference champions bs.

 

I always thought 12 was dumb, and four was sufficient. Don’t like the byes, if expanding should have gone to 8 or 16, and I like your idea to keep it simple with the bcs formula. I still haven’t been contacted for my input though.

Go the Ole Miss / Tennessee OOC route. 3 cupcakes and a bottom of the pack P4 team like Wake Forrest, Virginia type. Tennessee gets 8 wins a season because they get 4 automatic wins just showing up. When only record matters, that is the way to go.

I'm trying to figure out why you prefer keeping only 1/2assU, which I assume you do since my post conjectured why we don't we alternate between UM and FSU.

 

SMU didn’t beat a single Top 25 team all season. Neither did Clemson, until they beat SMU. “Actually took the risk”?

 

I never mentioned FSU... But if you want to ask me about them, maybe we can talk about having them on our schedule. Just don't assume what I think about that school in the future.

I did NOT mention FSU because that game is practically codified into state law... I think we can all agree that winning or losing to FSU doesn't have the same overall impact that winning or losing to that private school down south does.

Playing Miami is optional for us, yet if we schedule them, it's their biggest game of the year. They gain more just playing us than we do winning that game.

The TV exposure and bragging rights is off the scale for them because they play in the crappy ACC where they are forced to play schools like Wake Forest and other nothing schools with little to no real national interest. This is their reality... an afterthought in college football. That whole city pulls for that ACC college... and they live and die by what that school does in football.

But as soon as we put Miami on our schedule? That is a real lifeline for them in their college football world and their city. They are dying on the vine in that ACC conference, and they need to get more exposure by playing The Gators, where we do NOT gain anything by playing them because we already play a big-time schedule in the SEC.

Even when we beat them, it's an afterthought for us because we are expected to beat them. But if we lose to that school, we lose out on several recruits that are down to us and them... We don't really get that consideration.

Playing them in the first home game of the year was a bad idea that only an AD with no clue, nor care, about any records the Gators still had left. If we had to play them, it should have been the second game or after that. So, in a way, it's the timing of that game that really pissed me off. That was completely avoidable.

FSU is not going anywhere, so why talk about it?

 

Huh..again...they lost to Vandy..Im not so sure they would beat IU or SMU. They had their chance and lost it. That dynasty is over.

 

This is a crazy thread. I couldn't disagree more with a lot of what I read.

1. Scheduling 4 cupcakes is soft mindset and legit sucks for fans. Who got up for Samford vs how much we were up for Miami? Outside of a DJ bump, not even remotely close.

2. This stems from Alabama complaining, did anyone read the community notes? Bama was 4-0 OOC. The OOC schedule had absolutely nothing to do with them not making it in. So, circling back to point 1, if they schedule even crappier OOC and lose 3 SEC games again, what have they gained? A worse experience for fans and still no playoff. Zero logic.

3. If the we (SEC) want more teams in, then schedule other P4 teams and beat them. What would have happened if Indiana, SMU, PSU, etc. had played an got their backsides handed to them by an SEC team? They are all out.

If we are seriously interested in getting the most deserving teams in, and not just crying about SOS, then do what the NFL does with the following years schedule. The 2nd or 3 week of the season is the P4 power rating week based on conference finish:
#1 SEC v #1 BIG 10, #1 ACC v #1 Big 12.
#2 SEC v #2 ACC, #2 BIG 10 v #2 big 12.
#3 SEC v #3 Big 12, #3 BIG 10 v #3 ACC.
All the way down.

This would instantly be the most hype week of the season.

 

Well, no reason to schedule them any more, nor is there a reason for the league to schedule bama/Georgia, bama/texas georgia/texas etc.

but the issue is this: look at UNC schedule next year, its a freaking joke. the gators probably win every game on their schedule.

They play the worst 6 teams from the conference besides FSU. they could easily lose one game and make the playoffs. They basically only play Clemson.

yet we have miami, Georgia, tenn, texas, lsu, a&M and ole miss

you can't compare those 2 schedules -- its not even fair to be honest.
